Start up menu problems aftter fresh install

I recently completed a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.

I had a windows update problem, most specifically with Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3185611) - Error 0x80004005.

I eventually was able to download it form Windows Catalog, and install it manually. Windows Update indicates I am up to date, but a problem was never resolved.

Since I first did the install, I noticed that under Settings > Personalization > Start, two settings were missing: "Show More Tiles" and "Occasionally Show Suggestions in Start"

Also, while I can extend my start menu to the normal width (tho not as wide as with the benefit of the "Show More Tiles" setting), I can only add tiles "three wide", as shown in the attachment.

From what I understand, Show More Tiles was added back in the November 2015, 1511 cumulative update, but I don't know what, if any, the problem getting the updates had to do with it.

Could any of my notification settings be affecting this?

Hi, what's your current build number?
(Windows key + R, type winver)

I'm using latest 1607 anniversary - bear in mind MS keeps making changes to the start menu (yet another reason I never use it personally!).

Your 2nd screenshot does show 'show more tiles'. This is what I have:

Some differences suggest you have an older version of Windows.
If you have build 1511, upgrading could deal with any issues, assuming no new ones appear- as some have found!

Current tile size options appear to be based on x2. (I recall when x3 was available).

Thanks for leading me in the right direction. I was stuck on build 10420, and after many attempts, could not update further thru the conventional update method. This was the cause of my start menu issue. I was worried I would have to reinstall and cross my fingers it would work after that.

However, there's a lot of discussion out there reporting 1607 Anniversary related Windows Update problems.

I used Internet Explorer to access the "Windows Update Catalog", search for KB3189866 (the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems), and download & install the 1607 Anniversary update manually.

For more instruction and links, go to "How to download updates that include drivers and hotfixes from the Windows Update Catalog"

One piece of advice...the long installation process, which includes a reboot where the installation will continue out of windows, is normal, so be patient and let it do its thing.

Everything's good now. Start menu fixed and Windows Updates are current.

    Thanks again
