Thanks Paul, I'll probably give the fix a try tomorrow when I'm back on that PC.

Does the fix bring the 'new style' search box up that it would have had before the problem occurred ? Robs pictures seem to show Cortana in white and then the old pre-Anniversary style search box afterwards.
Must be a reboot, I did since. that fixed it,... It's back to the new style, now:

Changing the region to Gabon and back again has indeed worked. There seem to be a lot of complaints of this issue on the web in general. Wonder what caused it.

I spoke to soon as this morning the white search bar is back. The PC in question is currently installing the latest round of updates and so I will see what the state of play is after that.

Is there a fix for this for those of us on version 1803? Registry tweaks don't seem possible and region toggling doesn't seem to do it anymore. Is there an official Microsoft discussion on this we can follow to see if they even care?

I select 'Show Cortana Icon' under taskbar settings to avoid showing the white search box, else choose small taskbar buttons.

You missed the point, mate. I'm not trying to get rid of the search box, I'm trying to revert it to its initial/original color scheme and or theme.

Apparently Microsoft just doesn't give two thumbs for it. More important things tow worry about. What I don't get is how no one's been able to get a registry hack for this.

It seems to a bug which MS has no interest in fixing.
