i have a question. when i tell it to prepare bootable rescue media, it also says it will prepare an image.. also, it has option for PE architecture required for bitlocker support. how much space will it take? is this something that also takes 142 GB, or can i use a smaller space disk for the rescue media?

i already made the disk image. but now i want to make the rescue media, and see if i can use discs.

A DVD will work but the Rescue disk only uses about 275MB , so you can use a CDR if you have one....you already asked that several pages back......

The Rescue Boot Disk is so you can Run Macrium from the DVD/CD Disk later ...
it is not the Image of your hard drive , it is needed because you can not restore Windows while Windows is Running

You need PE version10 if it is not already selected ,downloaded and useable. Macrium will then Make the BOOTDISK IMAGE from it and Burn it to CDR/DVD or make an .ISO if needed. Or it can be put on a USB Drive too if your system will boot USB.

i am currently running the malware bytes. i am on that step. previously, i hadn't found anything. strangely enough, it seems that during the time of running this program, also trying to follow these instructions for my desktop only, another external drive became read only. however, it is possible that it already occurred, since i didn't try to save to it before. but no virus has been detected or malware as of yet. i read a comment here that somebody had this issue when they upgraded to windows 10 anniversary edition. but the owner of the other external drive was listed as some number or something that i don't know.. i think it isn't my former laptop. it is the same on both external drives.

So RKILL, TDSSKiller and ADWCleaner all found nothing?
Malwarebytes will take some time to scan.

i would like to know if anybody has actually had this issue. It seems like a virus can do this, but why are so many people reporting this issue after upgrading to Windows 10, or even updating Windows 10 anniversary edition? Some did with onedrive.. has anyone had this issue specifically similar to mine and resolved it?

What about Malwarebytes? Is it finished? Did it find anything?
You had an infection at one point. Once we're sure the system is clean, we can work on the permissions.

ok. no. it isn't finished, as i have it scanning 3 drives. it didn't find anything on the third drive which happened to have some read-only files and be assigned to some unknown user. i assigned the owner to administrators group on that drive. i am not sure if i should have assigned it to a different owner. malware bytes is scanning the system's hard drive now.

Be very careful with permissions unless you know what you are doing , you may make it worst...... Let SimRick guide you....

See what Simrick says but this tools is supposed to be able to reset Default Permissions to Drives
    Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro

Until you know 100% the Virus is gone I would not attach other drives to it as the virus could propagate to the new drive....

One Drive goes Read only if you have more than 5GB on it and refuse to lower your files below 5GB..... that started in July , I used to have a 30 GB OneDrive allowance which is now only 5GB.

Okay. Let's wait for the scan to finish please.

Kbird is right. You just can't be messing with permissions. That could have gotten you in the situation you're in now.
