Just skip ESET and go back to post #21. :)
i would like to know if post 21 scans both drives. also, since i only have the external drive to back up on, how can i check that drive first? i just ran avast prior, and it only basically found potential threats like 7zip, etc basically. can anything check the external drive before following through with that? what about the boot disc virus scan or whatever? i had let avast quarantine or delete some files but i kind of think none were dangerous. Also, is post 21 something to do prior to an inplace-upgrade? or instead of? this morning my system couldn't login and was stuck, but maybe that is basically because files are corrupted. This was in the lock screen after sleep mode or restart after some automatic updates.

Best bet.......Leave the external unattached for now...get the computer function correctly 1st , then deal with the External.

whether that is by scanning or doing an Inplace Upgrade or Clean Install is up to you....

Let's put the instructions in post #21 here:
Run the following programs in this order:

    RKILL
TDSSKiller (check all boxes and let it reboot so it can scan properly)
RKILL (again, because everything RKILL does is undone by a reboot)
ADWCleaner (scan, then clean; it will reboot as well)
Malwarebytes Antimalware full custom scan of all drives
    JRT

I would then do a repair install using an in-place upgrade, as previously suggested by Kbird. Select to keep apps and files.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

If all is successful, delete the images you first made, and make new ones of the repaired system and data.

p.s. Everything I have suggested here is free.
So, my recommendations were written in the order they should be executed.
In the Malwarebytes custom scan, you can select what it scans, including your external hard drive.
But I must reiterate, the scans should be performed in the order I presented them.

You can't do the repair install until you are sure the system is clean. A repair install would not fix an active infection.
If you would like me to evaluate your Avast log, please upload it.

okay, so i would make an image prior to any of this? if so, i save an image of the main system onto my hard drive, but the other one onto the external drive?

You can run the scans without making an image.

so i am just now attempting to start this, but i have a wireless connection that is slow and i may lose the connection (especially since i have limited bandwidth) what does the macrium image do? you said i don't have to do it, but what is using it versus not using it? what will all those virus checkers and malware checkers do besides possibly remove problems? then the inplace upgrade? how much may change in my system?

The internet connection is required to download the tools, and update definitions. It is not required for running the scans.

Macrium Reflect creates an image, or snapshot, or your drive, so that if things go south, you can restore the image and be back to where you started. That image should be on an external hard drive, and recovery media (CD or flash drive) should be created. If you need to restore the image, you have to boot to the recovery media in order to restore the image.

Normally they remove infections. There are occasions when the infections have messed up operating system files enough that it causes problems. Sometimes these problems can be fixed; other times there is so much damage, a clean install is the only answer. It depends on the infection(s) you have, how long they've been on the system, what other "friends" they've brought to the party, etc.

    .

Whatever you decide, please make a System Restore Point first, if you are able. Some infections disable System Restore, so it's impossible to do it. That's where a Macrium image comes in handy.

can you tell me which data drive were you telling me to backup? is that the external drive, or another part of my hard drive? macrium image shows the fat32 on disk 1, unformatted primary, windows drive, windows recovery, then another recovery drive which I am pretty sure is not external, yet it recognizes it as a second drive, then it shows my external drive. also, I had paused the download due to limited bandwidth, and macrium said I can download that from the main file, but I don't see an option.. don't know where or what it was.

post a pic of what Disk Management sees

Disk 0 should be your Win10 HDD and should have 3 or 4 partitions

Disk 1 is Fat32 so I would say that is your external as Win10 does not use Fat32 on it's Disks

you should se something similar to this
