i scanned the fonts folder before selecting the fonts and installing them. the file that i replaced is the hosts file. i blocked addresses through the hosts file from accessing my computer. i am not sure if windows changed files to read only because of that. everything else in that directory has the same permissions. i did not change any.

Am I reading correctly that an HP Factory Reset was performed? If so, this would have resolved the problem. There is no way that read-only problems would exist if this was actually performed. Did you check before installing anything (fonts), that the problem was gone?

I followed the instructions to create the media), and perform factory reset. I then scanned the fonts for a virus. Some fonts were overwritten as they are pre-installed, but some are not, but they didn't have any virus.
I am not sure if the read-only issue was there immediately after the factory reset, or if something triggered it.

I factory reset would have resolved all permission problems. But you didn't verify that before installing stuff?
How do you install your Fonts? Do you right-click each font file and select Install? What else have you installed since the factory reset?

I am also thinking like Simrick , ie......everything should be Clean and pristine with no issues after a Factory Restore.

If you are seeing issues I would be tempted before you get any further to run the Factory Restore again before you invest anymore time in debugging this ...again...

After the Restore run sfc /scannow from a command prompt , see the tutorial here :

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html

And do not install ANY FONTS or do anything else for a few days and see what happens.... Remember I did ask where you got your Fonts and if from known good sources.... there was a reason for that .....

I am unsure why you think you need to alter or replace the Hosts file ? usually the only thing in there is 127.0.0.1

And on a side note just because ONE Virus scanner does not detect a Virus or Malware does not 100% guarantee the File or Files are 100% Clean as all Virus Programs rely on Virus Definition files which are only so upto date and something new or so far undetected like all these new Ransomware Viruses or a RootKit may still be present.

So where are you at with this ?

You have still not said how you are determining the Read only status of you Files or Drives , just want to be sure you are just not seeing the System Protected Folders on C:\ eg the Windows Folder or the Program Files Folder after the HP Factory Restore , see mine below...
