I have to agree with you there, and they would have been changed the minute I found the keylogger, from a known clean computer, and that hard drive would have been wiped squeaky clean for a fresh install.

Oh! LOL Sorry, but I have to laugh - I so know the feeling!

I think also you may find this, if the permissions are for another user from a different computer; files copied over with their permissions/attributes to an external, then plugged into another computer?

I can only laugh too ......It's gotten bad enough I started dodging his calls until I knew I had time to deal with it , hopefully the New Passport will solve all my wasted time....

Actually I have read of the Permissions Issue from Another "User" with a Drive used on several Computers too.

however, i had used the external drive prior, which would have had winrar's zip file. i am not sure if the keylogger was already there, but i assume so. the trojan was later there. i believe it was there after the read-only issue. these have been quarantined, but now i don't remember. But i know it all started to happen when win 10 was updated. it is possible that those occurred at the same time, but i feel like that specific trojan probably came later.

i am not sure. Note: on the passport, i did copy the files on the Passport from my failed hard drive. However, i think maybe i was able to write onto that drive. The failed hard drive was read-only itself, and i had to alter permissions from windows 10 in order to copy to the passport. But the other one was a seagate drive, and started to become read only, but wasn't fully. but i think on the passport, it was not read only.. but original hard drive it was copied from was.. there is a backup directory on that drive that the drive was previously used for that is inaccessible. i think that it also may have an image file.

if i do an in-place upgrade, and select personal files and apps, how much of those files will be retained? will it retain music, photos, downloads, and program files/data, installs, appdata, etc? what about registry keys?

A repair install with an in-place upgrade, choosing to retain all files and apps, will keep everything.

All User Files are Retained , you lose some Windows settings and customization , and I believe the registry is redone too which would make sense on a reinstall but do some more research is that aspect is really important to you for some reason.

how about installed fonts? also, if i had copied font files into the font directory before, would that have made any problems, instead of simply installing them? i don't remember how i had installed them when i had moved them from the external drive to the new system. there were so many..

not 100% sure but AFAIK Custom Fonts are removed ......just don't know if what you have done means they are "custom"

but that brings up a question though....where did you get them and are you sure they were 100% virus / malware Clean ?

You can Copy all the Fonts to another Folder , say in Documents\Fonts for safe keeping if you want to.....

CP>Fonts>Select All>RC>Copy go to new Fonts folder in Documents and RC>PASTE......

okay, then, the repair installation recommends various download links.. will this affect the registered windows that i have? which should i use to also retain the current registration that came on the system?
