    it shouldn't be that way
if it can be safer then it should , we can't expect more than billion users to be advanced users like the good people on this forum , we should help and advocate for windows to work great out of the box for them (them = the not advanced billion plus users)
You just make it sound too difficult when it's really not.

for you and me it's easy , for a lot of other people it's very hard .

the ipad is a good benchmark , windows tablets and laptops should be as easy and safe as an ipad (and that is not an impossible benchmark )

Well Photoshop is being converted to a modern app. MS is releasing development tools that will make it easy to convert desktop apps, iOS apps, Linux apps, Android Apps and Java apps to modern apps.
it's not exactly converting it to modern as much as it's allowing win32 apps on the store (the developers just need to repackage it to run in a container , so it can be installed and uninstalled very easily like a modern app )

I already have a feeling that MS is sticking their collective noses too much in what I want to use on my computer, playing big brother for the sake of people that don't want to learn anything about appliance they are using.
We are becoming really dumbed down society. "May be hot when plugged in" on an iron and "Do not stick metal objects" in toasters are just some of examples. "Do not wash cats in clothes washer" is probably next.

It is what it is. Online safety is relative. Computer knowledge is relative. That's why there are computer technicians and friends who can help deal with those issues. If you think it's getting difficult for you, maybe it's time for you to do away with the idea of "one should not buy security software". Those programs are developed for a reason.

    You're on to something Mike,

People are getting dumber............ I invented a new style of ocean buoy
It's impervious to salt, sea and sun and permanently inscribed with "Pacific Ocean- This Side Up"
    Haven't sold a one
Not even the Coast Guard will try it!
Tell me please........... a person lost at sea, HOW in hell are they ever going to be able to tell where they are
People that fall overboard don't have GPS unless they have planned to fall overboard.................
    and who DOES that

First thing I disabled is UAC on windows 7. I was always clicking yes anyways. However, I have free Macrium reflect image backup, I also have Microsoft Security Essentials, I also have spybot S&D 1.6.6.32 installed. Even though a lot of poster on the sister windows 7 forum & here would disagree with those choices. It is my system and I want to run it on how I see fit. I even have a pup application that used only through Google Chrome, it called the weather channel app, it collect location data. Some software might flag this as a warning. I also use dell webcam central even with custom install it can also be considered a pup because it inject into other software, again my choice.

I download my software from either Manufacture website or MajorGeeks.

Most people do not want restriction on how to use their system or where they get the software from.

On Linux, yes you can charge for open source except for the code. Another, developer can port and make his application free.

OK, I've read the entire thread and have come to some conclusions . . .

    1. This is a Windows 10 forum. It is not an Apple, Mac, iPad or Android forum. Yet, the iPad (and to a lesser extent, Mac and Android) have been shoved down our throats as the ideal that Microsoft should follow and adopt. Really? Question: If Apple systems (such as the iPad) are so superior to Windows, then why do Windows machines so greatly outnumber Apple systems?

    2. I don't know about the rest of "us" but I am insulted in that I'm a "normal" user in some ways and an advanced user in other ways. As a "normal" user, it's been shoved down my throat (yeah, I like that phrase) that I'm clueless and don't have sense enough to be aware of what's going on; thus, I need to be protected from myself by restricting how I use my computer.

    3. "Normal" users are not as ignorant as they're made out to be! I know because I work with many of them.

    4. As a "normal" user, it's been stated that if I want to reverse the restrictions, I should become an advanced user so I will know how. Ummm, really? If a "normal" user's computer won't let him/her download from anywhere but the Store, how will they know other stuff is out there?

    5. A "normal" user may go to Best Buy, Fry's, Office Depot, etc. and see a program he/she wants, so shells out his/her money for it. He/she gets home with it and tries to install it, but it won't! Oh, H E double toothpick! What do I do now!?

    6. What happens to those distribution points for software? Lemme see now, Amazon.com comes to mind. There's Newegg and the ones mentioned in #4 above. I mean, if the "normal" user cannot install boxed software, what next?

    7. Corel, Nuance, Ashampoo, Professor Teaches, Nova Development (and many, many more) distribute their software through Amazon, Newegg, Office Depot, Walmart, Staples, Costco, Sam's Club, etc. So what happens when our computers are restricted to only installing software from the Store? Looks to me like a whole lot of retailers, distributors and developers will be SOL when it comes to sales of their product.

    8. How many developers do you think are out there? Usually, every developer has several programs and/or utilities. Take Terabyte Unlimited; they have five "for pay" programs and 17 free programs and/or utilities. Most of them are specialty programs and aren't used by that many. However, they're very useful for what they do. Multiply that by even 100 developers and the results are astronomical! Quite frankly, I'm wondering if the Store could even handle the kind of volume that would be required!

    9. Seems to me if the proposal were adopted, not only are "normal" users being labeled incompetent, but it would be a way to keep them as incompetent as they've been labeled.

    10. Finally, let's talk about freedom of choice. What I am seeing is a proposal that would take freedom of choice away from nearly a billion people and I just cannot buy into that kind of abuse. Everyone has the right to use their own equipment as they see fit, and as proposed, this would not be an option for nearly a billion people because they wouldn't be allowed the knowledge they need.

And those are just some repercussions to be faced from hermetically closed systems. What about innovations by small and even semi amateur developers, many a good idea and SW came out from them. Even MS and Apple started like that ! Where would we be now without wide open systems.

And don't forget those lovely child-proof caps on meds... always have to find a kid to get the blasted things off!

But all joking aside, Qushery, your point is understood. Unfortunately, in this world we have, it may be too idealistic to expect any Utopian solution to OOBE ultimate safety and security without sacrificing virtually all flexibility.

Most "normal" users, defined in your terms, when faced with a hosed or roached system (most likely a cheap LT or tablet) would just go out and get the latest spiffy looking Smart Thing that is the current rage. You can't teach everybody to not play with matches.

I'm not being sarcastic or rude or denigrating, just realistic.
