    Local Activation Permission

At each boot, event Log error writes...

    "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {8D8F4F83-3594-4F07-8369-FC3C3CAE4919}
    and APPID {F72671A9-012C-4725-9D2F-2A4D32D65169}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable)."

In this case, the usual fix cannot be made because the Default isn't listed (value not set) for Local Machine registry entry App ID {F72671A9-012C-4725-9D2F-2A4D32D65169}. Thus, it's unknown what DCOMCNFG item to open, so that Local Service|Local Activation can be added.

    Your thoughts?

I have the exact same error. The usual fix with runtime broker doesn't work. I can't work out what DCOMCNFG item this is either. Very frustrating.

It's not always RunTime Broker, but can be Immersive Shell, WSearch and others. The name most always shows up when the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE AppID "Default" entry is displayed in the right column - in this case {F72671A9-012C-4725-9D2F-2A4D32D65169}.

The key was right-clicked and exported for safety. Then it was deleted, and the error vanished.

Interestingly, when Dcom was opened later it prompted to update a missing entry, which was done. Thereafter the AppID reappeared in the registry and its default was listed as CDP Remote Text Handler. No further edits/additions were made to that entry in Dcom.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Just to be sure, the error shows in event viewer as:

Changing permissions so I could delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE AppID {F72671A9-012C-4725-9D2F-2A4D32D65169} has fixed it. No more error. No noticed adverse effect. Thanks for your help.

So I simply delete this entry in the registry and all is resolved?

There are no guarantees that what works for one system will succeed on another, and there's always the risk of problems - especially when editing the registry. It's always best to have a system back up. And you might consider simply living with the error message; it appears to have no negative consequences.

That said, if your error message is exactly the same as listed here, and you first right-click and EXPORT the registry entry to a convenient folder, you should be able to restore it if things go awry.

Per the earlier posts, after deleting the entry RUN the command "DcomCnfg" and drill down through COMPUTERS|MY COMPUTER|DCOMCNFG. If it behaves as it did here you should be prompted for a missing entry. Answer YES. Then exit the box.

I got the same error. When I looked in the registry, the CLSID said CDP Activity Store. The AppID "Default".
When I opened DCOM config, though, there was no such entry and I wasn't prompted for anything.
The only item called CDP was CDP Reference Host.
If I had to guess I'd say they were related, but so far there doesn't seem to be any info out there on how or what either of them are.
One thing I did notice was that I could modify this entry if I knew how it had to be modified (and that it was the right one). But without knowing I'm going to wait.
Depending on my search wording I also found a lot of technical references to CDP in Windows Server on Technet, and this on VMware:
    https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1007069

    Does that tell anyone anything?

You may find that the usual procedure to correct it (below) does not work for this specific error.

    1. Open Regedit.
    2. Go to HKEY_Classes_Root\CLSID\*CLSID*.
Note: *CLSID* stand for the ID that appears in your event viewer error.
    3. Right click on it then select permission.
    4. Click Advance and change the owner to Administrators. Also click the box that will appear below the owner line.
    5. Apply full control.
    6. Close the tab then go to HKEY_LocalMachine\Software\Classes\AppID\*APPID*.
Note: *AppID* is the ID that appears in your event viewer.
    7. Right click on it then select permissions.
    8. Click Advance and change the owner to Administrators (not Administrator).
    9. Click the box that will appear below the owner line.
    10. Click Apply and grant full control to Administrators. (leave REGEDIT open)

For the specific error that's the subject here, the AppID "Default" will not list a Data entry. It will instead show "(value not set)". Thus, the steps just outlined can be followed to grant full permissions to both the CLSID and the AppID. But from that point follow my second post. The steps below shouldn't be needed.

    11. Press Windows key and R, to bring up the RUN box.
    12. Type dcomcfg and <enter>
    13. Click Computer, click my computer, then click DCOM.
    14. Look for the corresponding service (in the Data column) that appears as the AppID "Default" entry.

As an example, look for the one that appeared at the right panel of the RegEdit. For example, the AppID Registry (316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97) contains the "Immersive Shell" Data with a (Default) as a name. So in DCom you would search for "Immersive Shell."

    15. Right click on it then click properties.
    16. Click security tab then click Customize in the Launch and Activation permissions section. Click Edit. Click Add. Add Local Service. Then apply.
    17. Tick the Local Activation box.
