Failed 7-to-10 Upgrade Attempt — Still Salvageable ?

I'm going to prepare by saving $1 a week until 2020.01.14. Hopefully, by then, the upgrade cost won't exceed $180. And who knows, maybe I'll even have enough money left over for a laité!

But on a more serious note, I guess I just made the wrong-headed assumption that if one starts the process before the deadline expires, one would be okay.

And I don't remember reading anything about “activating” the upgrade. I just thought if one installs it (which, obviously, I didn't succeed at; i.e., never got that far), then once installed, it's automatically activated. Question: is that not the case? Is there some kind of actual activation step one must go through? Like I say, I don't remember reading about that.
