Having problems with different video formats

I'm new to using a program called PowerDirector 12, but I think I have the basics down about how to save a video after shortening it to what I want it to be. The final problem is the different formats. When I shorten a video, it's partly to shrink the file size. But when I use .avi, the shortened video's size ends up actually being much larger than the original. So I tried MP4 and thought it was what I needed when I noticed the file size was much smaller. But here's the problem with that. I tried it once, and the audio was gone from the final video. I tried it again with a second video, and the audio was there, but the video was nothing but a green screen! Two completely different results using the same MP4 format. What's going on here? How can I shorten a video and actually have a shortened video with its audio that doesn't have a noticeable degradation of quality?

You mean using WMV? I guess I could try that too. I was just wondering why MP4 was coming out all wrong, either with no audio, or audio with only a blank green screen for the video. I've got plenty of other MP4 files that were made in other ways and they're fine. But I'll give WMV a try. Hopefully the quality won't be degraded. I would like to shrink the file size (which should happen anyway when shortening a video) without a noticeable impact on quality.

EDIT: I'd like to also mention that I've been having problems with MP4 from other sources too. There's an online service that lets me save Youtube videos and it always worked for me in the past. But nowadays when I try saving a video, it always saves as the default title "VideoPlayBack", and the audio is always absent. I'd really like to know why this has been happening with MP4 videos.

What online service is it, do you have a link? What software are you using to convert to MP4?

I've tried 2 different online services. Here are the links to them:

    http://en.savefrom.net/

    http://keepvid.com

Both of them automatically save the videos as MP4 files. I've never had a problem with them in the past, but now they only save the video portion without the audio. That's what happens no matter what video I try to save, so I know it isn't just any particular video. The problem also just started recently and has been consistent. Also, the file name that's generated is always the same too. It's always called "Videoplayback". In the past, the default title would be the original title of the Youtube video.

Also, I've now been using PowerDirector12 on my own computer to shorten videos I already have. When I save the edited video, I either get video with no audio when saving as MP4, or I get a blank green screen with audio only.

I should also mention that when I use those either of those 2 links to save videos, I do it using one of the public library computers (usually not the same one each time), which are running Win7 Pro. When I then try playing the video on that computer using Windows Media Player, it won't play at all. When I bring it home after saving it on a flash drive and try it on my home laptop (which runs on Win10 Home) using VLC Player, it plays with no audio. Additionally, the MP4 videos I've made after editing a longer video was made on my laptop with PowerDirector12, where I either get a similar video with no sound, or a blank green screen with audio only.

DVDshrink is for movies on a DVD. I'm trying to edit short clips from Youtube videos and videos I make with my camera. Videohelp.com is a forum. I was just hoping someone here had some advice as to why my MP4 videos weren't functioning correctly after either saving them from youtube, or after editing them using the software I have.
BTW, in response to Arc, I just tried editing a video and saving it in WMV format and got the exact same results. Just a blank green screen with audio.
