    Simple WP which saves automatically

Can anyone recommend a fairly simple / basic Word Processor which automatically saves your work as you proceed, rather as this Forum does? I have used WordPad for years and recently returned to WordMobile, and I use the new NotePad for Windows 10, but they do not have this feature. I thought Word did but it has let me down by not saving two important documents, which I must now work on all over again. I might experiment with this Forum, but will I encounter any problems with a long document which will need to be copied, without posting?

At the moment my PC is freezing or closing down unexpectedly when I am part way through a document.

    Word can:
Backup Word Documents Automatically with Best Software

I know Atlantis does- excellent substitute for MS Word- but not free
    Atlantis Word Processor. Registration

    Backup configuration:
Atlantis Word Processor Help. Backup Files

You need to fix your PC...

The free LibreOffice has both an auto backup when saving a document and an auto save every n of minutes.

Not buying this one as Word has always had an auto save feature, still does. From Office 365....

In fact under older versions of Office (Word) you could set the auto save time in Options.

Perhaps you should be working this issue first?

Thanks for the suggestions, which I am following up. As far as I can see Word does not save automatically unless it is part of the 365 Suite which I and I suspect many users of 2-in-1 Tablet PC do not want.). Nor can I even create or edit in Word and save manually on my PC. The version of Word on my phone is better but who wants to create a long document on a phone? I am currently testing 4 Store apps as potential replacements for Word Pad. Though good they do not offer automatic saving. If one updated with that feature I would immediately adopt it. I am also going to check if AlternativeTo has anything to offer.

I've been using Office (which has always included Word) long before Office 365 came along and it has always had an auto save feature. So with that what version of Word are you talking about???

I have the version of Word which I recently installed from the Windows Store. What is the difference between 365 and Office? Anyway, if you need Office to properly run Word do you have to have the other Programs too, 3 GB of space I understand? If so they would be redundant for me, and costly.

As for saving, the terms have changed a bit over the years. Word 9 [part of Office 2000] shows this for a search for autosave:
    About preventing loss of work

This topic provides reference information about: Recovering unsaved changes with AutoRecover
    Creating backup copies automatically
Recovering text from a damaged document
Saving more than one version of a document
    More information
    Recovering unsaved changes with AutoRecover

Microsoft Word can automatically recover unsaved changes to documents if the program stops responding or there is a power failure. When AutoRecover is turned on, the changes you make are saved at set intervals in a separate, temporary recovery file. Then, if you have to restart Word or your computer without saving your work, Word automatically opens the recovery file. The recovery file contains your changes up until the last time AutoRecover saved the document. For example, if you set AutoRecover to save every five minutes, you don't lose more than five minutes of work. How to change how often you want Word to save documents automatically and recover a document that was saved automatically.
AutoRecover is not a replacement for regularly saving your documents. If you choose not to save the recovery file after Word opens it, the file is deleted and your unsaved changes are lost. If you save the recovery file, it replaces the original document (unless you specify a new file name).

    Creating backup copies automatically

You can set Word to automatically save a backup copy each time you save a document. The backup copy provides you with a previously saved copy, so you have the current saved information in the original document and the information saved prior to that in the backup copy. Each time you save the document, a new backup copy replaces the existing backup copy. Saving a backup copy can protect your work if you accidentally save changes you don't want to keep or you delete the original file. How to have Word save a backup copy of a document and open the backup copy.

Recovering text from a damaged document

If your computer stops responding when you try to open a document, your document might be damaged. The next time you start Word, the program automatically uses a special file recovery converter to recover the text from the damaged document. You can also use this file converter at any time to open a document that has been damaged and recover the text. After you successfully open the damaged document, you can then save it in Word format or in another format (for example, text or HTML format). Text in paragraphs, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes, and fields is recovered as plain text. Document formats, graphics, fields, drawing objects, and any other information that is not text are not recovered. How to recover the text from a damaged document.

Saving more than one version of a document

If you want a record of changes to a document, you can save multiple versions of a document within the same document. Word saves only the differences between one saved version of the document and the next version. After you've saved several versions of the document, you can go back and review, open, print, and delete earlier versions. How to save multiple versions of a document in one file.
As for installing, I've always been able to do a Custom and leave things out. If choosing a different drive or partition, I've found Office still likes to put a lot of itself on the same drive as Windows.

Office 365 is a live version meaning it can be used online as well as on your local PC. That's the simple of it.

And if you got Word from the Microsoft Store then that version very well has auto save considering it looks to be an Office 365 version. And you do not need the entre suite for one app to fully work.

    Good luck.

Autosave every minute can be configured via View> Show main menu> File> File Options> Autosave> Autosave every minute.

However you must save the file with a name and location first for this to work.
