No. It initially appeared as Optional, then changed to Recommended. It has never been marked as Important. The people who claim it was marked important are confused because it installed automatically, which Recommended updates can also do on occasion. I looked in my Windows 8 history and it's listed as Recommended on April 4th. I looked in another machine that's Windows 7 and it's the same.

I haven't found a single shred of evidence of it being marked as Important, not one screen capture anywhere that proves this. Microsoft does not issue non-security updates as Important.

I believe I may now understand the "mystery" here. In Windows 7 and 8.1 there is a setting "Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates", which causes Recommended updates to be selected by default, and they show up in the list under the category "Important" tab. All Recommended updates show up in this list. If you look at the details, it will say that the update is Recommended rather than Important.

This is not specific to this one update, all Recommended updates show up in that list categorized as "Important", it's just a quirk of the way that setting works. Notice in the image below if you click on the entry, on the right hand side it says "Recommended" even though it's in the list of Important.

It definitely wasn't Optional on my PC.

I never check the info on Important updates (regardless of their sub-category).
Since you need to install them, the description is irrelevant.

I do check for more info on Optional updates, because MS' generic descriptions are useless.
I didn't check the info on that update ,until several days after I had installed it and people had started complaining about it.

I didn't delete that update until a few days after that.
I was playing around with a VM and I disabled the NIC on my Host PC.
When I re-enabled my NIC, I noticed GWX started communicating with something on the Internet (I had Process Explorer open at the time).

That may well explain the mystery.

I have "Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" selected.

I still don't understand why some Recommended updates are selected by default and some are not (though still in the Important list), however unselecting the setting does move all the Recommended settings to Optional.

I think we are missing the main point in this discussion. My understanding was always that KBs will improve my system. But I fail to see how the KBs in question do that. They are pure marketing stuff - and that should have been dealt with differently. It puts the whole KB system in question.

Sure does whs it really does when Optional updates morph to Important,
That one was the only recommended update and yes I know how to set my win update setting to where they are separated and recommended updates are listed with Optional ones,
The Important one was Optional = disappeared from the list and returned as Important,

I think you do not want to see it as it is.

The updates in question were "Recommended updates", not "Important updates". If and when you have selected to install Recommended updates as if they were Important updates, without your knowledge and specific permission, you have accepted that Microsoft might push an update to your Windows PC which is not important per se for the functionality of your computer and Windows, but recommended as far as Microsoft is concerned.

It is totally understandable and even acceptable that Microsoft as the maker of that already a bit outdated OS recommends their latest OS and you preparing for it instead. By accepting the fact that the recommended updates may be installed automatically and without your knowledge you have accepted the fact that Microsoft might recommend something you oppose.

I recall an update that went out to Win7 and Win8.x that pushed a download Win10 to the users. I think it was an opt-in situation where only users who were in the Insider Program received it and only if they chose some option when they joined.

Without going into the minutiae of individual KBs, I'll suggest that some of the important updates supersede previous updates and in the case above, are very important.

I looked at the KB Wolfgang cited, but couldn't glean much from the article. I accept his word that it has the appearance of marketing a new OS.

MS has always rolled out "get ready for the next release" updates. Many do HW & SW pre-requisite checks on a machine and many just add things that will make the transition easier (migration tools).

To be honest, I thinks it is a few months too early to be updating Win7 and Win8.x machines with Win10 preparation updates. That assumes that Win10 RTM is in October, NOT in July - there's a lot of work yet to be done. If they want to test the Win7/Win8 update scenarios, MS can run those in their lab (I'm sure they are)

Kari, you are missing the point. I don't oppose anything. I just don't want updates on my system that are no updates but marketing actions. Those are PUPs in my book. And whether I stay on a legacy OS is my business. I don't need any MS 'guidance' in that respect.

For millions of users that is going to be a mouse trap. We will see all the complaints when people thought to update their Win7 or 8.1 system and ended up with a completely new OS. Wait and see.
