I guess Linux is then your only option, and a really old phone as the mobile device. You cannot switch from Windows to Mac (Apple ID) or Chromebook (Google Account), smartphones are out of the question, too, for Android you would need a Google account, for iPhone the Apple ID and for Windows Phone the MS Account.

Also tablets are out of the question. Luckily Linux comes to rescue for you. It's good to have principles, however...

Wow.. all this fuss about a simple MS(Hotmail) account. That's all I have and I use it to log onto my PC. I only use that account for my Netflx account and it's never been an issue for me so far.

Jeff, this thread that I started got off track (as usual). I had this simple question why I started the thread:

Why is it an IMPORTANT security matter if I am not signed into an MS account.
The question is still not answered but a lot of fluff was posted.

Btw - with some of my systems I have an MS account, with others I tried the local account route. But that seems to be a thorny route.

Wolfgang, I would say that the answer Is it is not important. MS displays it as important because they want you to use it so you can use their apps.

... and one mouse click is all it takes never to be shown again.

I guess we don't really know why MS figures that it is IMPORTANT. I'll do the mouse click and be done with it. LOL But it will continue to puzzle me because it is beyond my understanding.

Maybe you should E-mail or call MS support and see if they can give you a satisfactory answer. I doubt anyone here on this Forum can answer it. Personally I think it's just a scare tactic to get you to use a MS account.

    Hi Wolfgang,

Do you have a Microsoft account on that computer as well as a local one?

I had a problem in Windows 8.1 which may be related. I was trying to login, without a network connection, using a Microsoft Account. And it would not let me log in- it gave me a message about needing to use the most recent password, even though I know I was using the right password (it's a newish account and I've never changed it).

It's as if the local copy of the password was incorrect/ out of sync, and therefore I couldn't log in offline (I was grateful I had a local account on that occasion). By logging in online a bit later, it seemed to fix it and it works offline again.

So I wonder if the message you are seeing is warning you that, for another Microsoft account on the computer, the password has gotten out of sync. It's therefore important because the user of that account wouldn't be able to login offline.

I guess you could test that theory by disconnecting the network and seeing if you can login to the Microsoft Account offline. (My theory falls down if you don't have an MS Account on that machine, of course!)
