Java's Position in Windows 10 Start Menu?

    Java's Position in Windows 10 Start Menu?


    So I have a newly imaged PC. I was sorting the Start Menu (adding shortcuts, renaming shortcuts, etc.). I moved the Configure Java shortcut into the Programs folder and renamed it just "Java".

    When I open the Start Menu -> All Apps, Java appears under the "C" section.

    Anyone know how to fix this? I've already tried renaming "Java" to just a "." or any other letter, but it stays under "C". This is happening on one other PC I've just performed a fresh install of Windows on.

    Start has other tracking data.

    Pinning something, anything, updates the information (Start - last date touched ... different from file date)

    Pin something to Start, then unpin it to test on your machine. Works fine on mine.

    Also check the folder JAva is in on the Start menu (open file location) - it might be picking up the alphabetical name C from there.

    I installed Java right now, just to check, it configured in the start menu rightly.

    If you uninstall Java completely and reinstall in the default location, IMHO it should be placed in your start menu rightly, too.

    That's the thing. I don't want the whole Java folder that gets placed in the Start Menu. I just want the "Configure Java" shortcut (renamed to just "Java") in the"All apps" section of the Start Menu.

    So it is 'Configure Java' actually; renamed to Jave.

    Start menu then placed it rightly, based on the correct name.
    That shortcut opens javacpl.exe, system recommended name is 'configure java'. So it is under C.

    I have done what you did; got exactly the same result.

    I never bothered to dig those up, just pinning ans seeing what I need.

    But usually most of the folders from installed programs are placed there in all apps, globally.
    Check "%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" make a backup just in case, delete the shortcuts that are't needed, in the java folder.

    Others and non-elevated installers will place stuff here, at user-level:
    "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

    Yeah I made sure to put the shortcut in global Start Menu folder in C:\appdata. Maybe this is something that can be edited in the registry?

    You mean C:\ProgramData.

    Don't know about that in the registry.
    Does a restart refresh it?

    Yup, that's what I meant. I have rebooted numerous times. I've also run System File Checker and Checkdisk.

    Navigate to %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    Create a new folder named Java

    Open file location of the exisiing Java menu item (right click)
    Find the target of the shortcut (right click)
    Make a new shortcut of the exe - on your desktop - name is Java
    Copy the new shortcut, Java, on your desktop to the new folder you made above

    You should end up with
    %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Java\Java.lnk

    Restart File explorer just in case
