Do I have to have a domain name and email address to that domain to use Skype for Business?

The answer is simple and most definite maybe. Or rather, the answer is no. And yes.

    You got that?

OK, seriously, you only need something Microsoft calls "an organisational Lync / Skype for Business account". If the organisation you work for or you belong to uses Lync / Skype for Business, you can install it and sign in with your organisational email address if the administrator has assigned a license to you. For instance all MVPs can join Skype for Business using the organisational email given to them when they got the MVP and connect with other MVPs. Another example was how we used this organisational account to join Skype for Business in our chat last Saturday, when I created an extra user in my domain which is using Office 365 / Lync and Dude signed in with that account allowing him to present his desktop.

That's the NO part, not needing a domain but only an account. Then the domain part.

If you subscribe Office 365 for Business or Enterprise you will get a domain, it is included in the price. This domain will be YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com, and the first user will automatically get an email address YOUR_CHOSEN_USERNAME@YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com. This email address already is at the same time a Lync / Skype for Business account and can be used as such in Skype for Business. You can create new users paying extra for each, and they will also get the default email address in YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com if you have no custom domains connected to your Office 365 subscription.

Microsoft does not sell domains although you can buy a domain from the Office 365 admin panel. Clicking the Buy domain link takes you to external domain partners, at the moment MS is partnering with GoDaddy in this. You can of course buy your domain wherever you want to, MS has just made it very easy to use GoDaddy, the domains bought from them will be added to your Office 365 with a single mouse click.

Adding a domain manually is not very demanding either but changing the required records by your domain registrar can in some cases be quite tricky. The admin panel will tell you if the domains are not completely set up and MS offers quite extensive help when you'll find Action required link next to your domain name instead of Setup complete.

When you have added at least one external custom domain you can either create new users bypassing the YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com phase, assigning them directly an account as USERNAME@YourCustomDomain.com. You can also change the original YOUR_CHOSEN_USERNAME@YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com email address to YOUR_CHOSEN_USERNAME@YourCustomDomain.com, or add YOUR_CHOSEN_USERNAME@YourCustomDomain.com as an alias to YOUR_CHOSEN_USERNAME@YOUR_CHOSEN_DOMAINNAME.onmicrosoft.com.

Whatever domains you use, the user must be assigned at least one email address in any of your domains in order to be able to use Lync / Skype for Business. As an admin you can then assign and limit the Skype for Business rights and features for each user:

Although it is possible to add for instance your normal Skype contacts to Skype for Business, it is not possible to use it only with a Skype username. I very strongly advice against subscribing Office 365 for Business or Enterprise if you really do need it only in order to be able to host Skype for Business meetings. In any case, check the pricing options first; not all Business and Enterprise plans include all features of Office 365.

I read through what I just typed and can't understand a word :). Hopefully you got it, though.

Thank you very much, Kari. I will have to study hard to understand, although it's very clear. It just takes me awhile longer than it used to to learn something new.

One thing I pretty much got is that GoDaddy will be the simplest way to go as far as a domain name is concerned. I'm not in a real hurry so I'll take my time and know what my goals and options are before I jump off the cliff.

The Office 365 Pro Plus account was given to me by a fellow Technical Previewer, and is good for a year. I have it installed and everything is working well. At the end of the year, I will definitely know if I want or need to keep it. :) The more I learn, the more stuff I realize I can do with Skype for Business, so I'll be testing with my family and friends for the next few months.

    Thanks again for the information.

One thing I know for sure . . . I won't be using One Drive for Business! I will keep all my files on my O365 Home Premium OneDrive account.

If you subscribe to a Business O365 plan, there's no reason not to use the free 1 TB OneDrive for B per user. It has only one fault, as far as I am concerned: it still has a 2GB upload file size limit, meaning I store my ISO images rather on OneDrive where I can upload for instance full Windows 10 ISO images, than to split them in parts and store on OneDrive for B.

The main reason I don't want to use One Drive for Business, Kari, is that I may not resubscribe at the end of the year. I know that I will definitely resubscribe to my Home Premium Office 365, since I have a plethora of files there.

With apologies for the up-coming off-topic rant... !

OneDrive for Business is a pretty flaky product in my experience.

One thing to understand is that, unlike a personal OneDrive, it's basically a Sharepoint document library. It's a different technology altogether, as I understand it.

Things on my list of its faults are:
    1. It has a habit of changing files you upload (certainly Word/Excel etc.). So the file you upload may be a different number of bytes to the original
    2. It tries to integrate with Word/Excel etc. but sometimes gets itself confused and locks you out of files totally
    3. The sync function is flaky and often stops working, usually without telling you
    4. Perhaps related to this... the sync function uses an Access Database which can get corrupt and it doesn't seem to recover itself (I had to manually Repair and Compact mine at one point). In this state, it was taking 20 minutes to open a file in less that 20 minutes - I assume it's always checking whether there's an online copy or something and was getting caught up in the broken database.
    5. You can open document libraries in File Explorer but this is flaky and seems to easily lose the link in some circumstances...
    6. ... but you have to use File Explorer if you want to do certain operations like moving a file
    7. Excel documents with links to other Exccel documents don't work well
    8. Time and Date stamps on files sometimes go wrong - eg. you can save a file but it won't update the Last Modified date/time (which gave me a nasty shock one day when I thought I'd lost a load of work on a document).
    9. You can't set files with the read-only attribute to protect the file from accidental changes (well you can, but the attribute disappears).
    10. Onedrive stops Excel's function (in 2010 and later) to get back files you accidentally closed without saving
    11. You can use lots of space... but only 20,000 files in a Onedrive
    12. Copying and Pasting a file in File Explorer then renaming it can totally confuse it within a sync'd folder.

It has a long way to go before I'd recommend it, I'm afraid.

I have to say I have not noticed nor had most of your issues, David. I am really satisfied with both OneDrives.

It's possible that there's something about how it's set up (and I'm only a user so don't know the details) which cause the problems. I suspect network capacity/speed is part of the story. But I'm seen all the problems mentioned and I know I'm not the only one that gets them, and even it the network is an issue, it should be more robust.

Do you use the sync function (to sync the Onedrive onto a local disk)? That seems to be the part with most problems.

David, I've seen numerous complaints about OD4B, but haven't experienced them since I have just installed O365 ProPlus. :) I will be watching that forum for information on both OD4B and Skype for Business.

I think the problems I've seen in the forum could have influenced my decision not to use it, but at the same time, the fellow Previewer who gave me the subscription warned me that it could totally expire in the next year.

Yes, I sync everything on OneDrive for B., whereas I sync selectively the content on normal OneDrive (for instance I do not sync my OneDrive\ISO images folder which is at the moment over 100 GB).
