    file explorer crashes

Hey guys, pretty new here.. Been trying all night to fix this but haven't had any luck so far.

Couple problems that I'm pretty sure are related somehow? The first is that file explorer is constantly crashing. It crashes when I try to go to file explorer properties, and it "opens in new window" even though its set to open in same window.

Also, the default programs won't let me change google chrome to the default web browser and now as of recently it won't let me access default programs but instead causes file explorer to crash instead.

I swear I've scoured the internet to find some sort of a fix that works but haven't found anything that could fix any of these problems.

I've tried sfc /scannow with no luck (can't find anything wrong) and I've tried other various fixes with no luck.

I'm begging you guys for help here, I'm figuratively about to rip my hair out on this one!

(Copied from another source, with identical results)

    Here's what I've tried:

    • Making sure the registry key of HKCR\Folder is empty.
    • Running the sfc /scannow command in an elevated command prompt
    • Checking the Explorer options for opening a folder in the same window or a different one on and off.
    • Checking the double-click and single-click options on and off.
    • Making sure I do not have this "Vault" program that everyone is talking about... SourceGear Vault?
    • Refreshing the Windows Explorer process in Task Manager.
