Pls help find missing music files after upgrade from 8.1 to 10?

After upgrading from 8.1 to 10 30 days ago, I'm now unable to find 4,000 of my 9,000 music files. I've searched through the entire hard drive. any idea of where they could be?

Hello, from what you say, I assume:
    1. Your music files aren't backed up. (Backing up is essential to protect yourself from disk or other hardware failure, corruption, andevents such as this)
    2. Your files were on the same disk/partition as your OS (Best practice is to keep your data away from your OS on a different disk or partition)

A number of users have reported loss of data from their desktop when upgrading. I assume your music files weren't on your desktop.

Recovery of lost files require you not make changes to your disk in case the disk space they occupy is overwritten.

Things you can try (more elementary).
    1. Use a portable version of Recuva and see if you can locate them as deleted files.
    Recuva - Builds

This may well not work in this scenario, but worth trying.

    2. Download a portable version of Everything, let it index, then search for your files.

    Temporary profile issue.

I also created a System Image before the upgrade. I don't know how to use it to recover missing files. Can it be searched for files; or does the entire C drive need to reset as only the system image? 2. thanks! yes docs are on the same (and only) partition as the OS. Libraries were copied to an external drive; mediamonkey cannot seem to find them in the external drive. windows.old must have been removed after upgrade

There is no windows.old folder; I deleted unnecessary files after the upgrade, must have taken the windows.old. Now I see it's not unnecessary. As the upgrade seemed to work as expected, and I had most of MediaMonkey music files; did not discover that 1/3 of the files were missing until 30 days later. Backedup the music library to external hdd; but MM cannot find the missing 4000 files when it tries to Find Missing/Moved Files. I will try recuva and the other program suggested, thanks.

Good that you have a system image- very wise!

You should be able to mount your image and explore it.
How to Recover Specific Files from a Windows System Image

    (Found by searching for
    explore windows system image)

I would tend to prefer recovery by that means.

(Your Windows.old would I think have been deleted automatically as it's only of use for reversion for up to 30 days)
