"Change Desktop Icons" App does not launch

Upgraded to Windows 10 today, against my better judgement, but thought I should at least give it a try. Wanted to customize the desktop/folder options as much as possible to at least resemble my old Windows 7.

Clicked open Themes, clicked on 'Change Desktop Icons' button. Cursor changes to thinking, window borders fade a little...and... Nothing. The little window that is supposed to pop up so I can change my default desktop icons and their appearances never opens. I can open the Mouse Pointer options, change the screen saver, etc., but I have gone round and round with how to get the default icons options. I want 'My PC' on my desktop. I want to change the default appearance of my Recycle Bin, etc.

Also unable to change folder icons in Windows Explorer. The option appears in the navigation bar under 'Manage,' but is grayed out.

Solutions I have tried: restarting Windows Explorer, restarting Windows, running everything in Administrator, installing Classic Shell, even running the old .exe that I used in Windows 7 to install my custom theme(even though I was pretty sure the program would crash--it did).

    My Windows 7 theme: http://old.theskinsfactory.com/images/portfolio/desktop-themes-detail-00015.jpg

I know that 10 cannot hope to come close to this theme, but any little bit helps. As of right now, some of the icons in the Navigation bar carried over from the Windows 7 installation. None of the Live View Folders, or Explorer icons. I'm disappointed in the lack of customization available for 10.

If anybody knows how I could possibly reverse engineer a way to get my old .exe to work on 10, that would be fantastic. I have the .exe for XP, Vista and 7. I just want it to carry over into 10.

The taskbar and start menu of windows 7 will not take that shape unless you apply Classic Shell.

You can do only one thing IMHO, to ask The Skins Factory to make it compatible with Classic Shell. Nobody else (including you) will be allowed to reproduce their premium without their permission. It will be a violation of copyright.

If you can edit imageres.dll and shell32.dll using programs like Resource Hacker or Restorator, you will be able to apply the icons including live folder icons.

    Hey, thanks, Arc.

I realize that Hyperdesk is copyrighted. I spent quite a bit of money supporting them in order to get these themes. I just wanted to continue using them, even in some sort of Frankenstein-ed hodgepodge if necessary. I recycle.

Pretty much solved my own problem in any case. Thought to look in my applications logs, and discovered that every time I was trying to open the desktop icons dialogue, the Hyperdesk install program tried to initialize and could not. Uninstalled Hyperdesk, and the 'Change Desktop Icons' dialogue box opened without a problem. All of the icons for the libraries and networks vanished/broke though, so I'm guessing that the program had already rewritten my .dll files, and uninstalling Hyperdesk left the system with no viable alternative images/coding.

Now attempting to locate those .dll files (after restoring to a point before I uninstalled Hyperdesk) so I can use them after uninstalling Hyperdesk. Very likely I'll just revert back to Windows 7 and start from scratch on a new drive with 10.

    Thanks for your input!
