This is true even with an EXTERNAL SSD attached via a SATA ==>USB2 connector. It's even faster if you have native USB3 ports and a USB3===>SATA connector -- in fact the VM on the external SSD can run FASTER than the HOST OS on a conventional HDD (or spinner).
Actually even a slowish old 2.5 inch laptop HDD connected via a SATA===>USB2/USB3 connector gives acceptable performance. I have a bootable Linux system on one of these with two Windows VM's (W10 and W7) using VMware. Performance is perfectly acceptable and makes for a nice "Portable" system too.
If you swap laptop HDD's for SSD's don't throw them away -- they make quite useful external storage for these types of things and are a lot more reliable (and faster) than things like USB sticks --plus have larger capacity too. They are also very portable and quite rugged.
