How do you get into safe mode if you can't get passed boot up screen?

My son's laptop runs windows 10. He is unsure if he got a virus or there is some other failure with hardware/software. We want to get into safe mode or just reinstall windows if possible. When he tries to get onto windows, the laptop boots up. Before it goes to the log on screen, it goes black, and then redirects the laptop back into the booting process and it's a never ending loop. How can we get out of this, and get into safe mode or just bypass this all together and reinstall windows in the event it is a virus. This just happened a few weeks ago and it ended up being I think the graphics card or something and it was replaced. I think this time around it may to do with a virus. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stacy

    Hello Stacy,

You can try and boot from the installation media and either reinstall or try the repair option. If you do not have any installation media you can create a DVD from the Microsoft Tech Bench.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del before the boot menu or screen appears. Then after it restarts, Ctrl+Alt+Del again before the boot menu or screen comes up. On the third boot, you should get a list that will enable you to start in safe mode.

    Try Fafhrd's suggestion first.

If it doesn't work, reboot while holding down (not tapping) the shift key. If that doesn't work, reboot while repeatedly tapping F8.
