So far for me.. build 10041 is working just fine as a daily usage/primary OS, With the latest update the start menu seems a bit snappier to me.

Security is a problem with Defender or any other AV program. Here is a scan of ImgBurn download from Filehippo.com a usually trusted site. The first picture shows the result from the MSE (Defender predecessor) scan and the second from Virus Total that scans with 60 different AV programs. Mind you that is exactly the same file.

What is my answer - I do all my important internet business in a virtual Linux partition. There the Windows malware dies.

That does it for me. I'm going to use Windows 8.1.1 as main OS until some other Internet Security package works in Windows 10.

Were those scans done on Windows 10?
If you do the same scans on Windows 8.1 does it detect anything then?

I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference between 8.1 or 10

To me, the main problem with using Win10 for daily work is the fact that, with any new build, features can come and go. This is a Preview, and "change" is the name of the game, not predictability, and certainly not stability. I would prefer to delay relying on the details of how to use it until it becomes stable at Release time.

This was the result of scanning the ImgBurn downloaded from FileHippo.com with Defender on W8.1.

MSE and Defender never find anything. Even a trojan slips thru. Because this is the real story:

That's what i thought would be the case, the reason i ask is due to the OP saying the following:

This should not be the reason one does or does not use Win10 as their main OS as the issue here is Defender and not the OS.

There are other Anti-Virus programs out there that work on Win 10 (obviously not certified to run on 10 but that won't be the case until pretty much final release).

Obviously i maintain it is a Technical Preview and should not be used as a main OS UNLESS you are happy to do so and take on the associated risks like myself and many others.

I for one have not had any issues with it while testing on VM's or Spare machine and now it is my main machine and that too is running perfectly.

Regarding the av tests above, pretty much all were PUPs (Open Candy). These are not 'Viruses' and potentially users invited them aboard. Malwarebytes and ADW are the best tools for removing these.

Anyway, we all have to make our own decisions on AV cover. Is it really true that AV programs run on 8.1 but not 10? Certainly, I am happy running win 10.

OpenCandy is not a virus, it is a wrapper used by cheap developers to try to get you to install more rubbish you don't want for an extra 2c per billion installations.

It has nothing to do with Windows 7, 8 or 10. If you download crap and then click on various "yeah I'll have that too" buttons then it is your fault.

There was also a trojan. If you like that on your machine, go ahead. I for my part do not install anything that has even 1 red flag.
