I gave up on Mint a couple of weeks ago as I just can't get a 1920x1080 resolution in a VM no matter what I try. Shame, it looks decent.
You probably did not install the tools. With the tools, the resolution should be no problem.

Thanks a lot for the offer whs, I really appreciate it! BunnyJ has already kindly offered to burn DVD's for me, so I will have what I need at the present.
OK, that sounds good too. But if you need more stuff, let me know. I will be glad to make you DVDs too. I just thought an SD card is more flexible.

[Wenda]I've been running Win 10 full-time for seven weeks now, so I certainly cannot be accused of 'not giving it a chance', and regular readers and fellow members of SevenForums or EightForums will be well aware that I'm not 'frightened' of any OS merely because it is different. Although the OS itself is reasonable enough to use and all my programs work (it allowed me to keep ALL my programs when I installed it as an upgrade over the 8.1.1 setup, without any hitches at all, which IS one big plus-point in 10's favour), the many niggles and dislikes were, well... many, niggly and disliked.
its a preview release and I know you know that , saying its not for you makes no sense to me ,its only in pre-release ,it to early to say its not for me .

I'll run the VM and try again, I haven't been able to get the tools to install either.

A while ago I had made a video on how to install the tools for Mint Mate. Maybe that helps.

These are the Mint Terminal commands you will need. Note, you have to extract vmware-tools-distrib to the desktop.

    cd Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib
    sudo ./vmware-install.pl -d

Thanks Wolfgang, I was missing the space between .pl and -d although even with the tools installed the 1920x1080 resolution isn't available, even after reboot.

EDIT: It's now working after manually resizing the window then going full screen. Wolfgang, you are a star!

Go full screen where the arrow points and see what happens.

I fully understand what Wenda is saying about Win 10 and I agree on most of it. But this is what really caught my attention...

That should not be the case. Image restoration is meant to be an easy task to do. Much easier than clean installation. It is supposed to be an easy and quick fix for acting up OSes. It should only take between 15 and 30mins. Something is definitely not right.

Personal data should be separate to begin with. It should be backep up separately. If that 150GB image gets corrupted. End of the story. I hope you do have a separate data backup.
The main issue is a combination of a slow HDD (both source and target are only 5400 rpm drives, but an SSD upgrade is planned for the near future) and a LOT of installed games (originally installed to test compatibility with 8/8.1, and not yet removed). The actual recovery process is extremely simple, and much faster than a clean re-install. Without the games, recovery times are in the ball-park you indicate.

Yes, all data is on a separate drive(s), and is also backed-up separately as well.

Anyway, I'll download a copy of the latest build next time I visit my friend with the unlimited connection, and give it a look-see.

    Wenda.
