Windows 10 takes a long time to boot after unexpected shutdown

I have a laptop with a slightly damaged motherboard, which does not allow the laptop to derive power from the battery. Consequently, in case of a power shutdown, the laptop shuts down.

The booting after this unexpected shutdown takes a very long time, during which the disk seeks to be entirely occupied. Even after Windows is logged, the system is sluggish for some time, during which System and compressed memory seem to take 100% if disk usage.

A cold reboot, i.e., after a correct shutdown and restart, takes very little time indeed.

What could be the issue? Is the system performing some tasks like disk checks etc. like what used to happen with XP or 7, whenever it shuts down unexpectedly, but I don't see any notification that this is happening..?

    Kindly advise.

    Thank you.

Windows 10 does take longer to boot after a hard shutdown, even with a full shutdown with fast startup disabled.

Fast startup allows the system to boot faster after a shutdown, as it is referred as a "hybrid shutdown". It saves your system state to a file called hiberfil.sys, the same one used for the hibernate function. During a cold boot, the system will resume from that saved state.

When your computer does a hard shutdown, it's not saving any files to the hiberfil.sys, so it's going through a normal boot cycle. Unfortunately, you won't get the error of the unexpected shutdown as problem reports and solutions is no longer on Windows 10.

I have fast startup disabled on my system, so I do have the sluggish boot to desktop for about 10 to 30 seconds at times. So what you are seeing is normal unfortunately.
