Yea I get it's a performance deal and a easy way to see which area the machine might need to be upgraded

I know on Newegg reviews it was the one tool everyone with Windows would refer to for comparisons. There were other tools, but WEI was the go to comparison option. On items that needed it, i always listed my WEI stats.

    Hi there

For over 80% of us I don't think we are the slightest bit interested -- we KNOW if our system is performing acceptably or not. For the rest there are literally ZILLIONS of applications that can measure performance in any number of ways if you are interested in those things.

I'm sure when you get into a Car you KNOW if it's working properly even if you haven't a clue how a car actually works - and probably haven't a clue if you open the lid what all the various bits and pieces are doing. It's only when it's NOT working do you attempt to remedy the defects. IMO that's when you need a diagnostic or sensible warning to confirm your suspicions.

In any case hideously slow graphics for example might be 100% acceptable on a computer basically used for Word processing, email and simple Internet surfing whereas for gaming the graphics processor needs to be top notch - so a "One size fits all" Windows experience measurement is essentially useless in any case.

    Cheers

Not sure about 10, but it actually was there in 8.1, you needed
to use the command line to run it though.

No, I can't recall the command to use. Might be something in
    the EightForums tutorials.

This seems to work providing you have no hardware issues, but it’s a long-winded process.

Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type perfmon and press Enter. In the left pane, click Data Collector Sets > System > Right-click System Diagnostics > Start. When it has finished, go down to Reports in the left pane > System > System Diagnostics and click on the name of your computer and the data will be collected. Scroll down to and expand the Hardware Configuration drop down in the main pane > Expand Desktop Rating drop down > Expand the + sign below Query, finally expand the + sign below Returned Objects to display your WEI score.

You are right :) Windows Experience Index - Update or Refresh WEI Score in Windows 8 - you had to run Winsat formal -restart clean and it still works in 10.

Most of the people I have met that used it a lot, just used it as a bragging point more than anything useful.

    whs said:
I think this is a lame excuse. The function was very much used by the users - at least as far as I can tell.
I think what they mean is that it wasn't used by users for its intended purpose.

Its intention was to be used as a way to drive users to the Windows Marketplace and get users to buy software based on their WEI rating, which almost nobody ever did. People used WEI as a sort of mini benchmark tool though, and MS probably felt with the introduction of the Windows Store that the Windows Marketplace stuff should be gutted, which included the UI for WEI (though WEI is still there in the command line, just no UI for it)

It's a wonderful feature that should be returned to W10. And, W10 should have everthing returned (a clone of 7) with a few more features rather than offset everyone's familair navigation of the OS. Familiarty with an OS in business is most important. Putting people into an "alien environment" causes them stress and reduced productivity. Remember folks, the average computer user knows nothing about the things we are interested in. It's "they" who go to work everyday and write code, design ads, administrate etc.

They would not want to drive to work with a steering wheel on the wrong side of the car and the shift on the ceiling. C'mon Microsoft, get a clue for gawd sake! Have a ball with your silly hand-held OSes but leave desktop and laptop navigation and interface the way it evolved to XP/W7.
