Toshiba not booting past recovery screen.

My Toshiba Satellite C70D laptop won't boot past the recovery mode. The night before it 'died' I was trying to save a doc and it said I didn't have permissions to save to the folder and that I had to be an Admin (which I am). The next morning I woke to a black screen. Did what I guess you'd call a hard restart? (pressing power button till it switches off) and it came up doing the Recovery Mode but then went black again after a minute or so (the numlock key is still lit).

I've tried various rescue disks but it never seems to find a CD rom to boot from and the only USB info it will pick up is a Windows 10 image I created off my pc. It goes to load the files. I see the small blue windows logo as though it's going to work and then it just goes black again. I've got the boot order to USB, CD and then HDD. It has come up (can't remember how I got to it) saying I was missing or have a corrupt msachi. Sys file.

I should add the only way I've managed to get that far is by using csm boot mode and not uefi.
Any ideas on how I can save this please?

    Thank you very much.

Hi, unless it's something trivial like the CMOS battery (worth checking), and assuming it previously booted from one or more bootable disks (various) I'd suggest it's a question of rescuing the content of your internal disk(s).

Possibly the battery as your laptop is from around 2013- but could be later depending on exact model- but could be some arbitrary failure of course.

Hopefully your disk may still be intact or you already have a disk image of it (e.g. Macrium reflect - free/paid) - tenforums members tirelessly recommend using disk imaging regularly and routinely.

Hi Dalchina, thank you for the reply. Would the battery cause the msachi.Sys error? I agree that I may need to just try rescue the disc. I will see if I can test the battery. Is there a way I can get to replace this sys file do you know?
Thnak you again for helping. Much appreciated.

Possible, it's actually AHCI and is usually listed in the BIOS.

I've been looking at replacement batteries at they don't look like a Cmos? It's a long cartridge type battery? Thanks.

The CMOS battery commonly is a CR-2032 about the size of a US quarter. Some Notebook may have 2 or 3 smaller batteries encapsulated and plugged into the main board. The long slim are the main supply battery although some time ago I did work on one that had only that battery.

Thanks Berton. So would there be another cmos battery that I should be looking for that is used by the laptop as well as this long slim battery? I'm not very IT savy with this stuff. Thank you for helping me.

Perhaps yours will be similar to this Satellite:
    YouTube

Go to about 2:53 in the video and onwards- he points to the CMOS battery.

From my previous post to make it easy for you:

The round silver battery is packaged so it has a connector. Yours may be like this (C70).
