I *think* it's OK now, yet I've done almost nothing! I uninstalled some Epson printer software which has been on for ages, but I don't have the printer, and ditto Garmin Express which I installed to update a friend's Garmin. Then I ran Ccleaner on the registry until it didn't fine any problems. I'm not going to re-enable Skype & CCleaner at startup as I don't want them. Very strange that it just started all of a sudden.

I will get it to run chkdsk as well, and I have memtest on a CD...

Those two will still be good to run regardless since the laptop I presume didn't have 10 on it originally as well as having been in use for some time. Disk errors always seem to manage to find their way around! The HP laptop I bought as a gift for someone back in 2012 with the 32bit 7 HPremium saw the drive go belly up in December one day while the laptop had just been working normally until bringing it back to check up on the updates and other things. But it wasn't just the drive alone since the larger replacement went in and still nothing on the display and no information found on how to reset the cmos on that model series.

Memtest is still a good one to run as well while the newer versions since the XP, Vista days have also seen some improvements in the hardware area as far as some indication of faults. Often however before the memory develops faults it will tend to be disk errors or even partition information getting a bit tainted that will start seeing slow downs and other glitches come up. That was certainly seen when taking a look at 8 and both the CP and 7 suddenly wouldn't even start up! With 7 however the Disk Check tool saved the day while the CP saw a reset which then saw 7 added in as a boot option while at first it was 8 added into 7 to get around the then new secure boot issues.

chkdsk sat on 17% for 30 minutes or so, however all of a sudden it finished and said everything was OK.

The tool does take a bit of time as a rule. But that the results showing things were good made you smile as I can imagine! At least you can now rule out any of those types of errors.

Depending on the age of the laptop since the SFC and Disk Check apparently haven't been finding OS and other errors the thing I have a suspicion could be the drive itself. It isn't something you generally want to hear but for a friend's older laptop actually a Vista model the drive had to be replaced twice! The Hitachi that came with that old HP model and then on a bit newer 7 laptop I saw upgraded to 10 that suddenly went out in december!

Later I found it wasn't only the nothing displayed graphics chip I suspect may have let out but when placing the first drive in an enclosure that was a no go! Ithen simply went after a new Toshiba model with 10 already on to get that sorted out. The drive saw 4yrs. of use at least while something else remains the problem with the HP model.

That was "finding OS and other errors" referring other types of system and disk errors, partition volume errors, etc. Not finding any is actually the preferred end result when running either or both of those two system tools. That's what you want to see not something else!
