Then I guess the best you can hope for is to reflash the BIOS from Windows.
any advice how to minimize risks?

A biggy, ALWAYS connect the computer to a UPS/Battery backup to assure a power failure or fluctuation doesn't interrupt the process which could result in a dead motherboard. If it's on a Notebook have a fully charged battery and leave plugged into the AC source.

then I'm okay, because I have UPS. I will try to turn off all security software, too, so nothing tries to get in the way.

okay, I successfully flashed it from the asus desktop app, and it updated the bios to a newer version.
but I still can't get to the bios screen, it's same like before.
Getting a little late in my time zone, so I might not see any response tonight.

Sounds like it is time to call/chat with Asus.

I purchased the pc from a store, it is still under their warranty. I didn't register with Asus, because I relied on the store's service.
Can I still chat with Asus?

did it. I called them, luckily they are on pacific time, so they were still available.
they said it sounds like a chip problem, and I should go back to the store. It is under warranty.
