You don't need to expand the width of the taskbar, nor do you need a 3rd party app to do what you want.

Right click at the taskbar > Taskbar Properties > right side, turn off "Use small Taskbar buttons".
    That's it.

I think your Resolution and/or dpi scaling may have a bearing on whether it works with both large and small Taskbar icons.

The Time and Date show for me using small Taskbar icons at 1920x1080, default 100% dpi:

Here are my computers all of which have the Use small taskbar buttons" option disabled...................

    Ace Aspire 7741Z : Res 1600x900. DPI 100%
    Intel Compute Stick CS125 : Res 1280x768 DPI 100%

Exactly, that is the reason I asked.

Aren't my system tray icons small enough ?
Well, yes, it depends on, they are not that big, but I guess my ones are smaller.

Yes, a good point, that might be the reason.

    Surface Pro1 : Res 1920x1080 DPI 150%
Many computers, yes, that's it, the system tray / symbols are as small as I wanted them.

My taskbar button setting is on [as here] How show the date in the system tray having the small icons enabled-small-taskbar-buttons-.jpg but I get the date [as here] How show the date in the system tray having the small icons enabled-showing-date-tray.jpg

    My resolution is 1920 x 1080 with a 100% DPI setting
There must be something else responsible for it. As I said before, I cant remember what though [old age]

Yes, may be it is not the resolution alone doing it, who knows...yes, yes, the same problem with me, the age...almost dead...

If you want to show Date on the taskbar with small icons you can do this easily by following these steps:
    1. Right click on the taskbar and uncheck the checkbox which says “Lock all taskbar“.
    2. Drag the edge of the taskbar and make it a bit wider till you see the date and time clearly.
    3. Right click on the taskbar and check the checkbox which says “Lock all taskbar“.

And if you want to display Date and time by disabling small icons you can still to that, for more infomation on how to manage date on windows taskbar read this.
