    Wynona,

I never said the operating system would become subscription based, just Microsoft cloud might. As I said above Panada Virus is a good example of a cloud application. If Microsoft is thinking of subscription based for the cloud. It will properly have different package levels. I think Microsoft wants to be like Hulu. Hulu provides some stuff for free, the rest is subscription based.
Ah, I see where I went "off into the cloud" when I said, "If Microsoft were to make Windows in the Cloud a subscription, I would be one of the first to abandon ship and look to alternatives."

Sure there would be different package levels, but I'm thinking it would be a practical nightmare, what with so many variables. The only subscription I have, or am likely to have is Office 365, and that only because I want and need it on all my computers. As to the tablets, I would use Office there only if I absolutely had to because Office for Androids is definitely crippled.

If Windows is ever served up by the Cloud, it would almost have to be as a service. I guess? I'm venturing off into territory I know nothing about. Gimme my DVD even as an ISO and I'm happy.

Aha! Have you tried the free preview Office?

Did you notice that some features require purchase of Office 365? This is the marketing hook, the additional revenue stream I spoke of. I don't know if the same hooks are in Office online, but I wouldn't be surprised for any company to offer a trimmed down version of an application in order to sell their flagship version of the product. It's not really a new marketing ploy ... get the user hooked on the free version and increase the chances that they'll buy the full fledged product(s)
When I was testing Office for Android Tablets, it's free for tablets 7" to 10.1", but you have to have Office 365 for anything larger than a 10.1" tablet. Why that cutoff was made, I haven't a clue, but there were oh so many complaints, especially from those with 10.5" tablets. And yes, Office for Android is definitely trimmed down; has to be what with tablets having much less storage than desktops or laptops.

I went to the Office 365 page and had a look, since it's been awhile since I subscribed. Here's what you get for the Home edition: Compare Microsoft Office Products

Oh, and by the way, I understand anyone can apply for the Preview of Office 365, but you gotta have a subscription before you can do much of anything.

Just a play on what Gabe Aul tweeted this morning on the puzzle answer. Nothing more.
