    Nothing opens except file explorer

Hi guys new to this all but just got so desperate I had to sign up to ask. I've had windows 10 since November and just today it's been playing up. None of the apps open - they display a message "element not found" for explorer exe or for other things like chrome, ms word you click on it and nothing happens. Can't even turn off the computer (start > turn off just does nothing) I've tried pressing the power button on my PC but that just seems to put it into sleep mode and not properly restart it. Could someone help please? Thanks in advance

For starters, try running sfc /scannow
See what it reports after you run the command, from your command prompt in ADMIN

Thanks for your reply Mike really appreciate it. The way I normally run the command prompt is by searching it in the search bar at the bottom. Clicked on it and it says "cmd.exe application error" with the error code 0xc0000142. Can't open it

Cheers bud, as you can tell I'm not too great with computers. It did the verification and I got this:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir / logs/ CBS / CBS.log"

OK same process as before, Windows key than hit X key
Then type this command. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

What most likey you are going to have to do, is do a repair for your Windows......but 1st need to check some things.

Than we need to check on your Windows version and build #
For that you will need to hit your Windows key and then hit your R key. Then type winver and tell me your Windows version AND Build #

Should be Version 11511 (OS Build 10586.104)

I've done the DISM thing and it's given me error 87. Tried the winver but nothing happens - is there another method of getting around that?

Sorry Mike. I'm an idiot. I didn't put the spaces in the DISM command. It did something and given me error 0x800f081f
