I totally agree. The backup data is safer if it's not stored on the computer.

...and not even in the same physical location.

However, the mysterious case of the now-we-see-it-now-we-don't data remains unresolved.. I mentioned the much more commonly reported case of desktop data going AWOL after an upgrade and NOT being recoverable.. this is the first time I've seen data reappear (albeit the Music folder) on reverting to the previous build. But I've not yet seen any reason why some experience this. Thoughts?

As for long term backup, vellum is the best. Access time- exceedingly poor; cost- enormous- write time >>> read, extraordinarily low storage density. But data retention - 1000 years +. No technology can match that.

Review my thoughts in post 7. If he is trying to play his music in Groove which will add all his music files to it's library and it is asking for his MS ID, that tells me his 10 sign in profile is maybe not the same as the one he used on 7. Maybe he had an infrequentIy used mail ID or created an account when he tried to fire up 10 ? I think the easy way out is to backup all his music to an ext drive and simply copy it to the new Music folder on 10 and not hassle with identifying with accounts; imho. I wish he'd revisit this thread and update us.
