Expecting one GUI to work equally well on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops is like expecting one vehicle to work equally well as mass transit, have the ability to haul 20 tons of cargo, and serve as a fuel efficient daily driver/grocery hauler.

I still feel the only way for M$ to meet their goal is to have a lightweight base OS that one can add feature and GUI modules to, based on need and desire.
    Good analogy, Lady Fitzgerald.
Not really. The analogy is flawed because we're not talking about the difference between a car, truck, bus, semi-truck, etc.. we're talking about the *INTERFACE* used to control each.

Each of those vehicles has a similar interface. They have a wheel, a gas pedal, a brake, in similar positions. They have other similarities as well, although they may have things that are unique to their specific modes. Now, a motorcycle has a VERY different interface than anything else, but this is because it has to be driven by your hands primarily to leave your feet free for stopping and balancing. It's not really the same argument for touch vs mouse as they are actually very similar.

As I said, just because it hasn't worked so far doesn't mean it can never work. You are letting your past influence your future. You cannot predict what will be invented (or won't be). Maybe you're right.. but you may also be wrong. It would be wise to understand that you don't know what the future holds.

How we perceive colors is specific to any individual person, so I can't comment one way or the other.

You started the argument by insisting that my claim was invalid, then used an invalid comparison to support it. If you don't want me to respond to that, then perhaps you should use an argument that is more valid. A UI is an interface and must be compared to other interfaces to be a valid argument.. you can't compare the hauling capacities of vehicles and expect it to be any kind of apples to apples comparison. I'm sorry, but it's just not.

I have been wishing for this for years, but MS doesn't seem to be very forthcoming.
    Hi there

I shouldn't really say this on a Windows Forum but there is a popular readily available version of that type of OS -- It's called LINUX !!!!

You can run from a Command line, run it Headless or add whatever GUI you like - KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, LXDE are just some of the popular options. You have a VIDEO server (used to be called the X-Server) and then you just add the GUI you want.

However I agree with your sentiment - Windows GUI should be a lot more flexible.

    Cheers

Coming from win7, the charms bar was something of an anomaly to me anyhow. I just got a Surface Pro 3 for Christmas, and the only thing I've used charms bar for, rarely, is get to settings. So, no great loss here. You can't miss something you really never had. The vast majority of upgraders, IMO, will be from 7 and the rest from 8.1 (a splatter from XP). But not to worry, somebody will aftermarket a gadget/widget/whatever to do the same thing! Probably as bloatware! LOL...

    Still waiting for 99xx........

The thing I want to see in Windos 10 is just a simple checkbox in setting/properties of tray/somewhere else
    "Enable charms bar"
And I'm not even a touch PC user
