    Issues with hibernation

I've been encountering some issues with waking up from hibernation that have been driving me nuts for quite a while.

So, my laptop used to hibernate perfectly with no issues but a month ago this issue appeared. Mainly, when I hibernate my laptop it works good. But when I turn on my laptop again later, the Windows startup screen appears with the logo and it just freezes there. At some point, the fans on my laptop start spinning really fast and it stays like that. The only workaround is to force shutdown my laptop, then start it again which ruins the point of hibernation.

Actually there is no need to deliberately hibernate your laptop anymore unless you like to keep a lot of applications open in the background. In W10 the normal shutdown operation uses a hybrid method which uses a type of hibernation so that the boot time is very fast. For me this is great and I rarely ever use hibernate as the applications I want open very fast.

I realise this does not answer your question but I offer it by way of background information. The problem may be that an update which occurred about a month ago has changed one of your drivers. If you know when this happened you could look in your reliability history and see if you can go back and spot any driver updates that might have caused this. If you can then you have the option of rolling back that driver in Device Manager and testing to see if the problem is fixed. You may have to do this for a few different drivers if there were several updated around then.

Note: Reliability history can be quickly found by typing reliability in the search box.

Well I forgot to mention but fast boot doesn't work also due to this issue. It just stays on the Windows logo, and the laptop fans start spinning very fast. After a while they stop, but it doesn't take long until they start spinning very fast again. And it stays like that forever. (Well the most I waited is one hour so yeah.)

There is another thing. I believe this issue started happening when I installed Linux Mint for dual booting. Can that be the issue?

PS: I entered the Reliability monitor, and what I noticed something interesting is that Windows isn't shutting down properly. There is an red X nearly every day that says "Windows was not properly shut down." Only a few days don't have this critical event.

Hibernate has always been an issue since XP SP3, because the manufacturers of the Bios and the motherboards have not kept up. Same goes with the hard drive manufacturers.

Most likely the last 10 push may have screwed things up.

You can use the Powercfg command in the Command Window to see what is going on.

Well, I'll mark this issue as solved.*

*- Thing is, Windows 10 was running very funny lately. It started crashing a lot, hanging, thumbnails on large folders not showing etc. While trying to fix my hibernation issue, and looking for my laptop CD with drivers on it I saw my Windows 7 CD just staying there with the rest of the pile, and that's where I decided to format my laptop, and put 7 on it again.

Its running great now! And I believe I won't upgrade to Windows 10 anytime soon as I realized how much I loved this OS in the first place. I don't know why, but at the beginning W10 was working great. But, I kept having issues mostly with the updates screwing over something on my laptop (My WIFI driver most of the times.)

Thank for all your help guy anyways!

Not all computers play nice with Windows 8 or 10.

A lot of us have done Clean installs and have never had any issues.
