    Icons Blank/Missing After Windows Update

    Hello,

After a recent update , many of my applications show blank files or default application icons. This includes Skype, Office and VLC media player; as of yet I am unable to find what links these applications:

From searching online, I have discovered that this is not a new issue, however previous solutions have not resolved the problem for me:

If someone could identify the update package that caused this, I would be grateful. Fighting off updates generally isn't a great idea so if anyone could provide a way of fixing this through other means, that'd be great.

    Thanks in advance!

    Daniel

    Hey DanielDC88-

You might want to check the "Default App" for the respective file types and see if they need to be assigned again.

PC Settings > System > Default Apps > Scroll down and click on "Choose Default Apps By File Type."

I'm having a similar problem, since ~three days my start looks like so: http://prntscr.com/9xpqa2
Infact I didn't modify any System file, so it must be Windows Updates.
Also the options to run it as Administrator or Open File Location disappeared. I really liked Windows 10 because of these "new" functions, and now they deleted them again?

    Dear B1rd,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the resolution you suggested is not for the issue I described. Please allow me to clarify.

The applications themselves no longer have icons. You can see from the screenshot that Word, Access and the other office apps have the default application icon rather than their actual icons. Other applications such as Skype simply show a blank file as their icon, as can be seen in the taskbar on my screenshot.

    Thanks,

    Daniel

What you describe makes me think you have been logged in as a new user or your account has got corrupted, you have lost all connection between shortcuts for the programs and apps and their location.

Can you check that you are still logged in as you were previously? Also look in the folder C:\Windows\users and check that there is no evidence of any new users.

    DanielDC88,

See if rebuilding icon cache will fix your problem..............

I noticed this too but not on any Office or Store Apps. This worked for me, for the few that were affected with a blank page icon- go to Program Files, locate the exe for, say, VLC, and right click send shortcut to desktop. That will display correct icon. Drag shortcut to All Apps list
or pin to taskbar and click replace, if prompted. The rebuild icon tutorial suggested may help with the Store or Office apps. Good Luck

I assume you mean C:\Users as C:\Windows\users does not exist, but there don't seem to be any changes here. Note that the shortcuts still all work, just they are missing their icons - hence why Skype was shown in the taskbar with a blank file icon. File associations are still the same too, although I did notice the new Windows 10 Photos app is the default for most image types - I had previously set it to the old Windows Photo Viewer.

I've already tried this and it did not work. It's basically the same as the Superuser Post, but I've added it to the list of thing's I've tried.

This fixes the appearance of the shortcuts, but when they're on the taskbar or searched for using the start menu they look the same.

    Are you referring to this?

The icon is not shown on the taskbar but there are icons in the menus?
