SSD running out of space prematurely

I use a 120gb ssd on W10 build 10547 and always get rid of Windows old files for earlier builds. When I add up all the space used when C drive is opened in a new window, it comes to 31gb. Trouble is that the disk has actually 88.2gb used, confirmed also by Partition wizard. AMD uses 2gb, docs/downloads 9gb, windows 14gb, recovery 5gb, 32/64 programs 1gb, it really should be a slim system.

Add up those numbers you get 31. Now about 120gb drive minus 31used is what? 89? are you reading you drive correctly, you have 89GB free space:)SSD running out of space prematurely-image-001.pngSSD running out of space prematurely-image-002.png

I have just double checked, and out of 111gb, used space is 87.4 and free space is 23.8gb. There must be hidden files somewhere.

Take a look in storage sense in the settings app, if you don't find anything there, open file explorer put a check in Hidden Item under the View tab, and take a looksy there.

Will do, I just switched over to W10 upgrade and turned on the other two pc's with W10 upgrades and allowing for extra space used on them, they are 39gb, 40gb and 45gb used.

That's just totally odd, the disk space amounts seemed switched around on the problem PC

Check System Protection to see if your max usage is set for the entire SSD. Had the same problem, and the max usage continues to override 6-10% I select.

Thanks Cliff, I found 41gb in use for system restore, I reduced to 8%, 8.9gb, and dumped the 41gb. Now C is a better size, 46.5gb. Windows was telling porkys about system restore.

    At the risk of being obvious Hyberfil.sys , pagefile.sys and Swapfile.sys ?

Welcome to the forums, and what a good start
I wouldn't have thought of System protection, because after installing I always give it 7-8% or 10 GB which is larger for VSS to have enough room and for dump files.
