If you didn`t notice, he has the Classic Start 8 button at the bottom, so he must`ve installed that, did you Dave ?

Get rid of that garbage if you did :)

But that`s not what that does either so who knows ?

I do have the classic start8 menu installed, for feedback on another forum. Possibly that could be making the differences, but I don't see how? It is a standalone program.
Why garbage? I certainly wont be using it permanently, but it seems to work 100%, and is low on resources.

    Hello Dave,
Do you see this below when trying to resize the Start menu? You'll have to be using the older resizable Start menu to be able to instead of the newer expandable Start menu.QUOTE]
No. I am totally unable to resize it. As it is early days, I think I will reinstall and see if I can get some of these problems!

Just been reading another thread. I think I will hold on the reinstall for a couple of days. Just read there is a new build imminent.

Try to customize it, and look who makes it.

I tried it, it doesn`t do anything you can`t already do.

Very odd how you got that start menu, making no changes to a clean install of 9926.

Regret I couldn't find any customisation options, but it works as is OK. Operator/maker is Crawler, who make other such utilities.

    Found this
Classic Start 8 - Virus and Malware

    Not to scary.

It does do one thing that the default menu doesn't - it gets rid of the "modern App" icons. Several posters seem to be asking for a way to do this (Not me)

    Live Tiles - off

    I tried a few things
    1) use the full start screen - nope, still no turn live tiles off
    2) Settings: apps - disable notifictioans (I think this is unrelated to 'live tiles')
    3) Open the application, click the hambuger, select settings, options

for the one I tested, News, the only option was: read news offline

You used to be able to one-click turn off live tiles.
It was bad enough that there wasn't a global - I don't want any live tiles,
but now it seems to me that you have to launch the app, select the menu, select, settings, select options, and throw the switch

I'm just beginning to play with the Jan release, there's a good chance that I am wrong.

I haven't restarted the machine (doing too many other tests) so I don't know if any of the above have any effect.

I am somewhat disappointed by some of the changes in the Jan release. Most of it revolves around ease of use and new stuff.

I'm also not too happy about the Start Screen change, but that's the way it is today. I had provided feedback prior about keeping the Modern and Desktop somewhat separate. The Start Scremenu is what I didn't want to see.
There doesn't have to be an all or nothing - MS doesn't have to decide - let the end user if they want old style, modern, or hybrid - it can't be that hard technically - all types are already there. It must be very difficult for Microsoft to decide how the user wants to access programs - so they shouldn't decide, there should be options (probably set at install, but configurable at runtime if the user wants to change). The more things are set in stone, that harder it is.

    C'est la vie

In for a penny, as they say. I would still like to revert back to the modern App start screen, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

For fun and curiosity, just downloaded and run the Classic shell Beta. ::

We're in the same camp on the previous Start Screen. I've submitted feedback many times on not trying to make one GUI into the other, including the Start Scremenu. This latest iteration is the worst IMO. I'm sure other people like it.

I'll try again - MS keeps trying, why shouldn't I

At this point, they have the code for three or four types - my feedback has and will be: MS - you don't have to decide on one for all, let the user decide how they want the Start Screen / Start Menu presented. I can't imagine how the current one plays on WinPhones - that sure is a tiny list on the left (full Start screen - all apps). There isn't an argument there really for the universal presentation.

C'mon ... we know it will be different next release too, right? They're getting warmer, then colder, then warmer ....

    From what I have read
Phones and devices with 7" screen and smaller will get the phone interface similar to now
8" plus devices will get what we have in 10

*with the exception of current 7" devices, they will get what we have in 10, new 7" devices will get the phone interface

Update: Nothing I tried turned off live tiles, even after restarting

Note: I uninstall most Modern Apps - that does turn off live tiles
Somehow, I don't think that's the answer you sought

I'll keep looking and checking this thread - I might want an app (Weather?) that has live capabilities, but not turned on.
