I have done over 50+ windows 10 upgrades on various configurations. This is my procedure:

Step 1. Backup the whole hard drive using Acronis True Image to an external USB hard drive on site. This include diagnostic partitions and others from the PC manufacturer.
Step 2. Run Windows 10 Upgrade program from the USB thumb drive.
Step 3. Customize and install additional programs as needed.
Step 4. Backup the image to my NAS for safe keeping for a short period, not more than two months.

Since you don't have that much data, may be a 64 (or 128) GB USB flash drive is enough to contain your data. You can get a 64 GB for under $30. Don't forget your data is priceless!

Depends entirely on how big/how high resolution the photos are. Typical photo is about 3 mb max so:

3 mb * 4000 / 1000 = 12 gb rated capacity.

(yes, I know there are 1024 mb in a gb before someone corrects me technically)

Those would be usual home digital camera type photos. Downloaded/emailed/selfie photos would be considerably less.

OneDrive used to be good, alas no more. Unless you grab it you will no longer get 30GB free but 5.

Drobox was always feeble - it is the same. Perhaps 5 or 6GB free.

I'm sure you could buy a 8GB USB for the price of a can of coke.

Obviously depending the resolution of your pictures.
Since you are concerning with your existing data. Here is simple answer. Look at your Photo folders or any data folders. Add each folders or subfolders and you find the answer!

Ok here is the lowdown...I had an external USB drive that I stored everything on..one day it stopped working and when I plugged it in my pc said none found...so I have tons of valuable info on this and I hope one day somebody will try to find a way to retrieve my files from it....so safe to say I have 0 faith in external drives.

when i put my files and pics on one drive... can i leave it there forever or is it temporarily.. i read somewhere that people who upgraded to windows 10 .. get one drive for 2 years?.
