Why would I change from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Meh. For most natural disasters, a fire safe or similar is good enough. Carbonite or whatever is even better. I tend not to worry too much about these for my personal things. I probably have much bigger problems to worry about (unless my insurance information is kept only in digital form, in which case it becomes more important).

You hit on it. Most of life has been digitized so keeping my data backed up to the teeth is critical. I keep very little paperwork—it's too volatile and bulky. I even have all my music digitized (tracks and liner notes) and will be getting rid of the original CDs in the future. I will be doing the same to my video collection in the not too distant future. I've even digitized much of my book collection by cutting the books apart and scanning them to PDF (OCR and editing for OCR errors takes far too long).

Home fire safes are only rated to around 350°F for up to 30 minutes. That will protect most paperwork most of the time but photos, electronics, etc. will be barbequed well before any paperwork. Also, safes can be stolen. A bank vault, however, is much, much better protected from disasters short of a really, really big earthquake (and we don't get noticeable earthquakes where I live) or a meteor or nuclear strike. I pay only $50/year for my safe deposit box and it is only six miles from my house; I usually make that run when running other errands so the distance is essentially even less.

The main thing to remember is not to keep data in only one place.

By the way I am probably the oldest PC user in this forum. I was 78 last month. Right now I feel like I am 100, but hopefully the surgeon will fix that problem tomorrow. I have a torn meniscus, the pain is so bad when stand up it makes me want to scream. Right now I am sooooo thirsty, no water until after surgery.

You are indeed a few months older than me. I wish you lots of luck with the surgery. I know the pain. Both my knees should be done but as long as I can still walk, I will avoid surgery.

It is funny that you like reinstalls. I hate them. I have 7 systems and I do a lot of 'experiments' that brick the systems. If I had to reinstall each time I would not have enough time to eat, LOL.

Yes but there comes a point where the the maintenance becomes costly for the old car. Another example although tires may not be a good example but what if you need tires and your type aren't made anymore? And the tires are key you getting to where you need to go. You the ability to get a replacement 1 year ago for free but that time has passed and now you have to pay 200 for the same brand new care.

Fortunately I don't have any of those problems.

What can be easy about reinstalls and difficult about images. A reinstall may take 2 days of hard work and an image restore takes 20 minutes of the machine working. I rest my case.

I do clone's, its a matter of booting up on the clone disk, then copy back to my main disk. A reinstall...Yipes!

Restoring from an image is easier and faster plus images require less room to store. About the only time I clone a disk anymore is if I'm replacing it, such as replacing the HDD in a notebook with a SSD.

I will repeat something you obviously missed.

This is why using XP today is dangerous. Not just for you, but your computer can be taken over and used as an attack vector for others, making you part of the problem overall. Often times people don't even know their systems have been compromised in these ways, and they are acting as an attack vector without even knowing it.

Maybe you don't understand this. What it means is that if your computer is compromised, it can be used in the commission of another attack on another computer. This is how internet worms work, moving from system to system infecting everything they can find and using them as new bases of operation.

It's like when someone uses someone elses open wifi router to commit a crime. The police will come to YOU, and you might claim "Oh, well, someone must have been using my open router", well that may be hard to prove and more importantly at some point YOU have to have responsibility for allowing that to happen. The same is true for open email relays, which are used for Spam. The internet rightly cuts these off, and is the primary reason most ISP's won't allow you to run your own email servers anymore on home networks.

When you put your vulnerable computer on the internet, you are becoming part of the problem of insecurity, and becoming a piece in the attack infrastructure of criminals. THAT is why I care what you do. Your actions affect me, and everyone else who are citizens of the network.

If you want to run your 15 year old OS in isolation without connecting to the net, by all means... I won't argue.

So... basically the same story as why you should still vaccinate your children. It's all fine and dandy when everyone at school washes their hands, but eventually someone's going to go to Disneyland.

Rubber gloves won't protect you from measles. The only thing that will is to either get vaccinated or survive the disease (I had it when I was a child, roughly 60 years ago, when they didn't have measles vaccinations).
