Nope. You need not install 8 and upgrade - you can activate 10 with your retail 8 key as often as you like.

It really isn't complicated. If you have one key you are allowed to use it on one PC. Not 2 or 10 or 15,000.

If you keep re-installing on different hardware (I do with VMs) then you have to phone up to activate in the end. If you try to run different instances concurrently on the same key it will get blocked but for sure you can move them as much as you like (as long as your license is transferable).

Nope to what part of my post. I never said you HAD to reinstall 8.1 to upgrade, simply that yes you can. I completely agree with you that it's only one license, whether you use it as 8.1 or choose to upgrade to 10, it's still only one license.

This end date is a myth. The upgrade to 10 will always be free for people with a valid license. That is what my crystal ball says (and it was confirmed by a man I met on the street). Remember you heard it here first
Once you upgrade, it's free for the life of the device. Your free upgrade (digital entitlement) does not expire on that date. Anybody that decides to upgrade after that date will pay though. As it stands now, that's what Microsoft is saying.

How to Upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft

To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability.
    Availability was July 28 or 29, 2015 - I don't remember which.

If you do the free upgrade that PC gets a digital entitlement. Go to Settings > Update & security > Activation > Product key. Mine says "Windows 10 on this device is activated with a digital entitlement." If I check my product code with showkey it's listed as VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. All 4 of my PC's that upgraded to 10 Pro have that same key. So do all the other PC's that upgraded to 10 Pro. The one key per PC is history with digital entitlements. Also, if I clean install I can click skip or enter that generic key and it will activate with that digital entitlement. My original Windows 8.1 Pro Retail key is no longer tied to this PC. I can use it on another PC if I want. I have the same rights of use as I had before I did the free upgrade. Yes, if I use in quick succession on several PC's activation will likely fail, but that's how it's always been. As long as it's only in use on one PC at a time I should be legal.
