Are you saying that simple unzipping of ISO image to a USB thumbdrive will produce a bootable USB thumbdrive???
Yep. Just make sure that you format the stick with FAT32.

    Hello again
How can I tell if my current OS is .WIM or .ESD?

Is there a good tutorial on converting on to the other?

If you have a Windows 10 ISO, then mount it. If you have a USB or DVD, then insert it. Look in the sources folder. If you have a dual 32-bit/64-bit ISO, USB or DVD there will be a sources folder under each x86 and x64 folder. In the sources folder will either be install.wim or install.esd.

I don't think you can convert from wim to esd, but here is how to convert esd to wim:

ESD to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 ESD File - Windows 10 Forums

The ISO created from install.esd will contain install.wim.

It is neither... And it does not matter if was installed from .esd or .wim file....

That Tutorial is now Purpose built - for windows upgrade .esd file...
And yes you can convert esd to wim and wim to esd..

Isn't it strange that both the procedure and the script told in a tutorial explaining how to convert your ESD downloaded by Windows Update to ISO image in fact do just that, convert your ESD file downloaded by Windows Update to an ISO image?

Sure you can if you use this:

NOTE: There 2 options: wim to esd, esd to wim

    Download the Techbench ISO

Insert DVD > Right-Click the ISO > burn disk image > verify DVD Burner Drive and select Burn
I've burned 3 of those iso's the last one the iso was downloaded direct from MS. So I DBAN'ed the HDD and tried a clean install of 10. I tried 3 times with 3 different discs and they all stopped at 15%.

The upgrade from 7 was easy and it works fine. I just can't install from disc. I hope the factory DVD's will work better than the burned ones.

edit: I always check the verify box and it always fails to verify. I tried turning off all virus protection and it still wont verify.

You can not use DVD-RW disks..
They have to be DVD-R disks..

I always Create USB Media - no need to make drink coaster from DVD's

    I'm using DVD-R. I guess I'll wait till it's available on DVD.

Why would a USB stick be any better than a disc?

I guess I'll try to get a USB stick to verify. Thanks for the tip.

    Hello
I made 2 discs exactly the same way.
I used Tech Bench and created DVDs.
When I right click file explorer on the left for one I see; Win 10 iso.wim.
When I right click file explorer on the left for the other I see; J_CCSA_x64FRE_EN_US_DV5.
For the 2nd, with the odd looking characters, when I look to sources, I see,"wimprovider.dll".

Why are they different and more importantly will they both do the same job of installing and repairing with DISM?

    TY

    Hi,

The second dvd seems to be burned correctly. The "Sources" directory/folder should contain a file by the name of "install.wim".
That's the one that DISM would use if you pointed it to that path.

The first dvd however seems like a "coaster" to me.

    Cheers,
