Poll: After testing Win10TP are you going to get a copy??

I certainly getting windows 10 cant wait to it released roll on January and the latest preview be released

As with any software, the initial release is somewhat buggy. We're not at the initial release though - we're only about 2/3 of the way through a preview release - what we're seeing is a work in progress and from an old developer's standpoint, Win10 looks very good.

MS is attentive to feedback and has provided nearly immediate fixes. Of course, they are trying to make Win10 stand out and meld the OS to all platforms - so while they fix stuff ... they break stuff. That's development!

I do not have a Windows phone or a surface, so my impressions are only from the Desktop point of view. It seems to me that MS is, as usual, playing Ketchup. To be fair, only Apple has a similar line up of devices (desktop, phone, tablet) - Android doesn't have a desktop that I know of (you could technically load Android on top of Linux or any other kernel for a desktop version)

Perhaps a better poll would use the adopter stages from Diffusion of Innovations by Everett Rogers

I'm usually in the late majority when it comes to OSes - the previous OS usually works well enough well into the release of the next OS. As the next OS is developed many of the 'must have' features are worked into the previous OS.

Look at how many XP machines there are (most would stay on XP if they weren't scared of the security issues ... however most would have moved to Vista if they knew how many security holes there were in XP (sp1 .. sp2 .. sp3)
By testing Win10, I'd say were' all in the innovator stage - but the poll is about when Win10 is RTM.

I answered yes in the poll, but will probably only purchase a license if the Price is Right. Win8 works well and I see nothing but a correction in Win10. MS corrected the Desktop experience (even though, IMO, the hubbub was manufactured). I think it's great that many of the Win8 haters actually like Win10 - that bodes well for Redmond.

What's the price point? < $50, but I think the 465,000 very active participants deserve a reward for being unpaid testers. One license for free would be great, with additional licenses $15-$20 (??? max=5 ???) would really bolster early sales. Better to have a great marketing success story with less revenue than to have another Win8 story (marketing wise).

If the price point matches the above, I would get 6 copies (1 free and 5 for my adult children).

I'm in complete agreement with you Bill (almost called you Bart again). Having had experience with both Vista and Windows 7 as a beta tester, Windows 10 is right up there with both as far as the time element goes. Yes, Vista was actually pretty good in the beginning . . . Marketing just jumped the gun on RTM before all the bugs were worked out. We testers told 'em but they wouldn't listen to us.

Once I got my hands on Vista I really liked it and Windows XP faded into oblivion for me. It's amazing how easy it is to forget an older OS when the new one is well thought out at the beginning. I would probably have stayed with Vista, but IIRC, Windows 7 was offered within a couple of months after Vista RTM'd. My first offering of Win 7 was as near-dogfood as you can get. But it was even better planned than Vista and so my only real experience with Vista also faded into oblivion. I never looked back from there on.

I hate to burst your bubble, Bill, but as many years as I've tested Microsoft product, I've never seen Microsoft hand out free copies of anything to anyone other than those who were specifically invited to test a particular product. In fact, at the end of the Windows 7 beta, only those who had actually filed bugs (I think it was two or more) earned a free copy. I've tested several versions of Office and I've only received two free copies (2010 and 2013).

When you get right down to it, 465,000 testers is not too far off from being one third of the 1,500,000 Windows Insiders. Like you, I hope to have a shot at getting a reasonable price for Windows 10, but if not, I'll have to pony up anyway, simply because I don't care for Windows 8.1, although it's been improved a lot and I could live with it if I have to.

It's rare to find another person who liked Vista - the issue, as I saw it, was that XP had too many security holes and Vista swung the pendulum too far. The heightened security in Vista made it difficult to use always answering the prompts. That was fixed in SP1 or SP2, but it was too late. Win7 was out in testing and contained all of the good stuff in Vista plus a whole lot more.

I'd like to mention though, that I got Win8 for free - a convention giveaway (thanks Robin!). Win8 was also offered for either $15 (I think) on a time limited basis and then $45 in the early days as sales didn't meet targets.

We'll have to wait to see on what MS does - they won't broadcast it so keep an eye on the blogs, newsletters, etc. I'm sure Shawn will see it way before I do

How did you install Win10 - dual boot, VM?

I wonder if overclocking presents an issue, BSOD folks often ask members to turn off overclocking as a test to see if that eliminates the issue. Worth a shot.

No, because, in simple terms, it's not Windows 7, and it's not for desktops. Calculator does not need to be full-screen!
Other than that, there's no Aero Peek. That bothers me for reasons that I myself don't understand.
I generally despise the "modern" and "universal OS" philosophies. On a desktop, it's not called an App. M$ needs to understand that. On a desktop, we don't tap things. We click them. M$ needs to understand that, too.
I don't want a M$ account, nor XBOX integration. I don't own an XBOX and it's integration is wasting disk space, in my opinion. Much the same goes for Skype, I don't use it, I don't want it, but Microsoft puts it there. And it's full screen.

I think live tiles look dumb and don't need to bloat my start menu, I think that M$ needs to realize that Windows is not for tablets or smartphones. They make Windows 8.x/10 for tablets and scratch their head when desktop users stick to Windows 7.

tl;dr
It's not "app", its program.
Programs should not be full-screen unless I tell them to be.
Integration with other M$ products wastes space and annoys me.
Live tiles make for a large, ugly start menu.
I miss Aero features.
M$ should stop trying to be apple.

IF that was too long to read, It's not a new and improved Windows 7. I think I'll use Windows 7 for the next decade and then Linux.
