"open with" dialogue for mime types that have a default application

This is both weird and really, really annoying.

Say I set MPV as the default media player. For ALL media types. Then I go into my music library via file explorer and double-click an mp3. It will ask me which app I want to open it in "or keep using MPV".

Even though there's a "Always open using this app" checkbox, it doesn't listen to it and if I shut my computer down or even just log out, it completely resets that open with dialogue... so if I go to double-click an MP3 again, it pops up.

I've double-checked that MPV has control over it's mime types in the control panel (not just the Settings app), and like I said it asks if I want to "keep using MPV". And that's just one example, it does it with my web browser more often than my media player.

Any way to stop this behavior?

Hi, Just remembered- MS disabled the ability of 3rd party programs setting associations like that from Win 8 on.

    So you can go to
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs
and try setting the default there.

You can explore what's happening and perhaps work out a solution by (e.g.):
    - Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations
and scroll down to (say) mp3 and check the association is set.

    (Of course there's also
Settings, search for Default, and go from there).

Again you can check as above.

Yeah, I set it as default via Settings > System > Default Apps first but when this problem came up, I immediately went to the control panel. The list there tells me MPV has all of it's associations.

This issue just popped up again with pdf files today. I went to open one and it asked me what to open it with. I had previously set it to be Chrome, but it just REALLY wants me to use Edge.

I think that's what it is. It just periodically checks if I'm using Microsoft programs to open files they can open, and if not... it asks me if I want to use them. Quite annoying.

Still wondering if there's a way to disable that functionality.

I use foobar2000 to play all of my audio files. Windows 10 has NEVER displayed an APP choice checkbox. Maybe it has something to do with MPV instead of Windows 10.

Once I install a program and set as default in the settings, I never experience an Open With dialog box. Does this happen with all of your programs, or is it just with audio files and MPV?

As I mentioned, it also happens with browsers quite often as well. I don't know about other programs, since media and browsing the web is all I really do on this computer.

For instance, I'll click a link on skype sometimes and it'll ask me what browser to use, despite Chrome being my default browser for ages. As mentioned in the previous post, it did the same for pdf files today too (despite Chrome also being selected as the default program for that for a while too).
