Screen not shutting off after set time while logged on

I've been hesitant to post about this for some time as I thought it was just an isolated incident, but this has been happening for some time now (several months). I thought it would correct itself after updating Windows or restarting my PC, but it has not. I set the screen to shut off after 25 min. I then tried a lower setting (10 min) to see if that would solve the problem. It did not. What can I do now to fix this?

Hi Steve, try launching the task manager (ctrl+shit+esc), select the startup tab and sort by status so that enabled are up top. I've heard of Skype in the startup messing-up the sleep and screen saver functions.

Do you see any items in there that aren't required to be in startup? Most new apps automatically install themselves in startup and only slow performance.

You could right-click and disable most non-system items and they'll still work fine after you choose to launch them. If you would like to post a screenshot, we can review them together.

I disabled some of the startup processes and partly uninstalled one of them (Aimersoft). Saw one that says NA (not sure what that is, so I disabled). Let's see what happens now.

I reckon most (all?) those Startup entries could/should be disabled. In some cases it will simply mean you'll have to start a/the program manually, rather than having it run in the background 24/7/365, just in case you might need it ?? Far too much resource hogging software running unnecessarily.

Besides, if anything goes pear-shaped, can always go back it and Enable whatever.

SUPERAntiSpyware ... is that there intentionally ? If it is, wouldn't be my first choice of protection. Just saying.

Good call, if you're not certain what it is, it most likely doesn't belong in the startup. I'd suggest you consider disabling more of them, as mentioned, it's pretty simple to re-enable if required. I've recommended additional items to disable in the attached pic.

There are other places to look if this proves to not be the solution but always the best place to start. Please report your findings. Cheers,

    Michael

    Steve,

I think MSASCuiL is an obsolete Windows Defender startup item. Display the command line column to find out so you can then decide to disable it to avoid any conflicts with Windows Defender [Windows security].

PS You posted a whole-screen screenshot which was not easy to read. A trimmed diagram would have been more appropriate. See my ditty - a set of links for taking and posting screenshots - TenForums and the guide to the Snipping tool further down that page.

    Steve,

Whilst there is no specific diagnosis method available, it might be a problem with your dispaly driver after updating Windows. Go to Dell Drivers & downloads, enter your Dell Service Tag and download then re-install the display driver. While you are there, check for any Bios update.

Denis, no display driver is not available, but the BIOS update is.

I suggest installing the updated Bios.
    - I know many people worry about Bios updates but I have never had a problem with any Dell Bios update.
    - There is some general guidance in What is BIOS and How to Check and Update the System Setup or BIOS on Your Dell System - Dell UK
    - And see this for explanations of Bios installation methods on different models BIOS recovery from hard drive - Dell

I'd also suggest installing the display driver even if it is the same version as the one you have already - Windows has no means of knowing if a driver is corrupted
    - You wrote "no driver". I can remember once seeing a view of Dell Drivers & downloads that only listed ones that had not already been installed. I cannot remember how I got back to a general view that showed them all but i do recall that I was able to - perhaps I had to use the search facility at the top of the list once and then clear the search to see all entries.
