    Co-opted Functions

Agree about the pads, but it was with a USB mouse though. What's really clumsy about them is the limited keyboard with some keyboard combos. How does one do Alt/F4 on one? > Alt/Shift/F4.
I also hate the way that the Function keys have been co-opted for random laptop functions.

I haven't looked into it on my Toshiba, but maybe there is a way to set which set of functions are available on start up.

My laptop is effectively a desktop (I never move it) but I don't have a spare USB mouse.
Since I rarely use it, it's not worth spending $10 to get a mouse for it.

    I have it connected to:
    • Our TV via a media box, so that I can watch videos
    • Our stereo via a media box, so I can listen to music

All I do is turn it on and I access the content via the media box's remote.

"When finished with a desktop app > Alt/F4 > Then hold WinKey > Strike period key > Strike down arrow > Release WinKey > Bye-bye > Auto back to Start Screen." "As easy as 3 keystrokes." Is that the new modern math or am I counting wrong?

Anyone that knows anything about keyboarding would know you're counting it wrong.

Alt/F4 is to close apps. Doesn't have anything to do with closing the desktop. I close either type apps out with Alt/F4.

BTW, the desktop really doesn't totally close. It's a way of somewhat hiding it, but it doesn't look like you guys are interested anyway.

With that I'll post with Alt/S.

Anytime you want to come up with a list of tasks that both of us know, whs, we'll time performing them. With the speed of that mouse in your videos I think I can beat you hands down.

BTW, the touch-centric Modern UI has actually made using the keyboard much easier to use for navigation.

    The super-lappy has a full-size, full-function '105-key' keyboard, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I dislike 'cut-down' keyboards with a passion. I use a cordless IR mouse, and hardly ever use the touchpad.

I like Metro. I always did. I don't see why Microsoft needs to do away with something just to mollify a few loud complainers. I'm happy for Metro-haters to delete all that stuff and have a system they like. But I want the system I like too. Both can very easily coexist.
I think it's a bit more than a few loud complainers otherwise Windows 8/8.1 wouldn't have been the disaster it's been!

Windows 10 is aimed at satisfying both interfaces but still doesn't provide a start menu that's as functional as Windows 7.

Unless Windows 10 can offer something better than Windows 8, it's not going to tempt many to update.

My ASUS laptop has a full sized keyboard but there seem to be a few keys moved around a bit. For instance, I find myself hitting caps lock when all I wanted is shift. I don't mind the touch pad. I'll pull out my cordless trackball though if I'm going to be using my laptop for any extended period. It's quicker and easier to use.

Even if my laptop had a touch screen I can't see myself ever using it. If it was a tablet and that's all there was, sure. But, if there is a keyboard mouse in front of me that's what I'm going to use. All that being said, I'll take the Start Screen over the Start Menu any day, regardless of the interface. I just find it easier to use, period.

Can you post a list of functions or abilities from the Windows 7 Start Menu that do not work in the Windows Technical Preview Start Menu?

I like the Laptop layout, mine has a big size keyboard on it and a numeric keypad, I find that plus the touchpad with gestures very nice to use

Touch is nice to use with the store apps, but depends on where I am using it, sitting with the laptop on my lap while watching a bit of tv I find using touch nice for navigation as my hands/arms are in the position similar to how I would hold a tablet, sitting at a desk/table then I never use the touch side at all
