What's this "We mouse/keyboard users have no use for gaudy tiles on our screens." all about? I'm one of those mouse/keyboard users and I use the tiles. I'm not alone either. Please don't assume we all hold your views.
Same here. Never had nor can I think of getting a touch screen in foreseeable future, yet the Start Screen with its flexible, customizable and versatile tile system was for me the main reason I switched from 7 to 8 already after my first try when first pre-release build iof 8 came available. Now when Windows 10 took it a positive step further allowing me to have my tiles in Start Menu I have totally moved from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

As mostly a "keyboarder" I'm using far less of the mouse (which is actually somewhat touch gestures) and mostly keyboard using less strokes navigating 8.1 and 10 than I did with 7. The WinKey is now more important than ever. The Start Screen is far easier to navigate than the Start Menu. The only time I really have to use a mouse is with a browser. They're not very keyboard-friendly.

One example > In 7 to search the web one has to open a search engine in a browser > If lucky one can Tab key over to the search box or one has to use the mouse for focus and cursor > Type criteria > Enter > Opens web page. If not satisfactory results, one must Alt/Back arrow back to the search engine and repeat the process. A PITA.

In 8.1 and 10 > WinKey/S (Default is search "Everything" or Alt > Enter > Arrow down to highlight category > Enter > Alt returns to search box) > Type criteria > Enter > Result pop up to a separate, individual page to go back to for reference > Right arrow over to a result > Enter opens any result in it's own browser tab to also refer to or reject as necessary. 10's style result page is quite different than 8.1's. I think it's a step backwards myself, although it is a result page to always reference.

I feel one must use the system for a while to really see the benefits of the system. I don't quite see 10 with all the advantages of 8.1 yet. We shall see.

Yup and that's why MS has brought it back to W10, because many people agree with you. However, for those of us who have grown to like and use the W 8.1 Start Screen, hopefully it will be available to use in W10 on non touch screens. Having the choice to set W10 up the way each user wants, would be a good thing IMHO.

That was one of the first things I did after installing Windows 10 on my laptop. I'm quit happy with the Start Screen.

    Hi there

Although primarily a Mouse / Keyboard user I've found SOME TOUCH stuff very useful -- particularly at giving demos etc where just being able to SLIDE images / texts etc around and increase windows dynamically. If you are giving a tutorial / demo in front of a decent size audience this is MUCH simpler than messing around with a mouse or even a keyboard at times.

People need to realize just because THEY don't want feature X doesn't mean others don't want it either.

I like the idea also of LIVE tiles (a bit like gadgets) on the desktop and CUSTOMISABLE tiles would be fine --what was useless for me was the old W8 start screen where if you had a zillion applications you had to endlessly left scroll like an oversized mobile phone menu.

I still think the idea of CASCADING Tiles would be great if that could be implemented. All these one dimensional scrolling Tile type systems fail because they are essentially "One dimensional" and non cascadable.

Classical menu systems work because you can cascade them and get to your application very quickly. Navigating through say 500 tiles is a pain but a decent cascading menu makes that type of navigation a breeze.

If you want to see a great implementation of Touch have a look at some of the images in the movie Minority Report !!!!. and that's from as far back as 2002 !!!!.

So far I have to say that I'm pleased with Win10. Is is ready for prime time?? Not quite but at this point it's really good. As for the start menu.. I like it. What I would love to have is an icon/selection to get to the start screen and back by pressing the desktop tile in the start screen. Just like the way I can in Win8.1.1 with Classic Shell. It's just a nice way to do that, IMO.

And I agree.. fix up the bugs in 9879 but that I think will be accomplished given time.

    Jeff :)

It's the tiles themselves that I don't like, either in the start screen, or even in the start menu, I just don't like them. I prefer text, plain and simple. In my file explorer, I always have the view set to "Details". It's just how I like it.

    YMMV.....

I’ll dare say that touch is the ultimate in navigation so far as speed and one doesn’t need a mouse. Just a keyboard if not the onboard keyboard.

I know > How does that work at a desktop PC? > Here’s one solution:

    You got that correct.

I like the idea also of LIVE tiles (a bit like gadgets) on the desktop and CUSTOMISABLE tiles would be fine --what was useless for me was the old W8 start screen where if you had a zillion applications you had to endlessly left scroll like an oversized mobile phone menu.
Live tiles are great conveying info. Much better than the dead icon.

After using the Start Menu for a while I continue to prefer the Start Screen by organizing tiles in titled columns. Having used it for quite a while, I can pretty much navigate to a tile blindfolded by knowing how many Page Down keys and arrow key strokes it takes.

Using a mouse, I'll bet many don't know that by just rolling the mouse to the right it scrolls the screen quite quickly.

The Start Screen was designed in relationship to the size of the human finger. Although not impossible, I'd think the Start Menu would be nearly impossible to navigate via touch.

They have a folder tile feature on WP8.1 that I’m hoping they carry over to 10 that addresses that problem.

Rearranging tiles on the phone is much easier also. Hoping they carry that over too.

I don't understand why people who hate the Metro Tiles don't just delete them all.

I like Metro. I always did. I don't see why Microsoft needs to do away with something just to mollify a few loud complainers. I'm happy for Metro-haters to delete all that stuff and have a system they like. But I want the system I like too. Both can very easily coexist.

So far, Windows 10 is too much like Windows 7 for my liking. I never had any strong feelings for Windows at all until 8/8.1. Windows was just the boring OS that ran my games and gave me access to the net. 8/8.1 is actually interesting and fun to use.

I hope they don't wreck it.
