You've got that right and it's only going to get worse......
Microsoft is in the advertising business now and not interested in regular business.
It's going to take some serious competition to make them change.
Actually they have ruined the internet and the computer industry.
Jack are you intentionally trying to stir things up with posts such as this? I'm really beginning to suspect my faith in you has been misplaced.

    Sorry Wynona,
I'm obviously talking to the choir.
I've been watching this farce for years. Nothings changed and progressively getting worse.
I don't sign on to the internet to watch endless advertisements. I can't stand them. I don't
want advertisers interfering with my internet activities.
You will NOT hear from me again......

Yup, gone are the days when you could buy a stagnant, native operating system for 150 bucks that would fulfill all your needs.
It's all about online services, advertising and selling lots of bandwidth and data; it's the only way to generate revenues in this day and age!

Whilst I agree that the Internet is a cesspool of ads (just like radio and TV) I'm not sure how MS can be blamed for trying to copy Google.

The same thing applies to "App Stores" (e.g. trying to copy Apple).

And then there are places like this that cost nothing at all. That said, the problem is that if we want free content, we have to put up with the advertising for most of it.

The trouble is that it seems like most of the "free content" on the Internet is ads.

A couple of days ago I was trying to view a web comic and the page had over 150 scripts that needed to be loaded to show one picture.

The cost of a product includes the cost of advertising it, therefore (IMO) advertising is just corporate-style "income redistribution" .

If I get something for free, I can understand that the producer has to make money somewhere - thus ads are acceptable. But if I pay thru the nose like for American TV, then I do not want to see any ads. That's why I stopped watching TV in the US a good 10 years ago. I don't understand how people put up with that.

When I am in Germany, I watch TV. There I pay $25 for 350 channels from 20 countries and half of those channels are commercial free. Those I watch - the others I deselect. If I would not live behind a mountain that obstructs the satellites, I would get a dish. That TV costs nothing and you get even more channels.

If they start to plague me too much with commercials on the computer, I would sell all my gear.
