    I apologize.
The last suggestion I have for you is to do an in-place install also known as repair install.

Use the link below to download the Media Creation Tool. Make sure you pick the correct bit-version.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/softw...load/windows10

    After downloaded, run the tool.
Select the option Create installation media for another PC.
That will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer. Make sure you know which location (folder) the iso is going to.
Once the ISO is downloaded, right click at the ISO file > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
    Installation will begin.
You have the choice of keeping your files, settings and apps, or keep nothing.
    Activation is automatic.

when I opened the download an iso file was not listed so I just ran set up, I entered the product key of my widows 7 installation disc (I upgraded to 10 from this) but it would not recognise it.

    You didn't do it right.......
You have to find out when the downloaded ISO is stored.
How did you run the "set up " without the ISO ?
If you have done it right, you will not be asked for product key.

    Please start over again....
    1. Locate your downloaded ISO file.
    2. Right click at the iso
    3. Click Mount
    4.Click Setup.exe
    5. You shouldn't be asked for product key. If for unknown reason you were, there should be an option such as SKIP or "I don't have a product key", click that and continue.

sorry Billy although I have been a pc user from the days before windows using DOS and DTREE modern terminology throws me, I was looking for a file extension .iso but now know that the ISO is the complete DVD mirror file I have down loaded so I have just again right clicked on it, selected mount and ran set up and again was asked for a product key. I might be awhile responding to your next advice as the lady of the house is nagging a bit.

In the window where you are asked for a product key, do you see an option SKIP near bottom right ?
If yes, click it and continue.

No Skip option just the Back and Next option, next of course is shaded out as it does not like the product code. I started the iso down load the went to bed do you think there might have been options to select during the download?

Yep. Sounds like you downloaded the wrong version.

    I am stumped.
I have used the same method at least 5 times. I never was asked for product key.
were you using the method I told you to the letter, or were you taking the liberty and burnt the iso to a DVD and use the dvd to install ?
There is nothing wrong using the dvd, just to make sure I know exactly what you were doing.

    Start over from scratch again.
Download the Media Creation Tool and watch the screen as it progresses. Make sure you input correctly.
If you were using Windows 7 Home Premium or lower, you select Windows 10 Home.
If you were using Windows 8.1 ( non-pro ), you also select Windows 10 Home.

If you were using Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, or Win 8.1 Pro, you select Windows 10 Pro.
