System partition and boot partition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

System partition and boot partition are computing terms for disk partitions of a hard disk drive that must exist and be properly configured for a system to operate correctly. There are two different definitions for these terms: Microsoft definition (used by Windows) and the common definition used by every other operating system.

Microsoft defines the terms as follows:

• The system partition is a primary partition that contains the boot loader, a piece of software responsible for booting the OS.^[4] This partition holds the boot sector and is marked active.^[5]:970
• The boot partition is the disk partition that contains the operating system folder, known as system root or %systemroot% in Windows NT.^[6]

A single partition may be both a system and a boot partition. In case they are separate, however, the boot partition does not contain the boot software and the system partition does not have the system root.^[5]:971
Before Windows 7, the system and boot partitions were, by default, the same and were given the identifier "C:". After Windows 7, however, Windows Setup creates, by default, a separate system partition that is not given an identifier and therefore is hidden. The boot partition is still given "C:" as its identifier. This configuration is suitable for running BitLocker, which requires a separate, unencrypted system partition for booting.

If you want to fix this, and you know what you are doing.

Step One:

Delete the System Reserved partition. edit: In this case, wipe the entire disk.

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8/10 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up the command prompt.
- Run the following commands at the command prompt.

diskpart
list disk (this will give you a listing of the disks on your system)
select disk # (select the disk you want to clean)
clean (running the clean command will delete all partitions on the disk)
exit

From your screen shot. If you disconnect disk 4 from the PC, you will not be able to boot up Windows. Here's how you can fix this problem.

Install then run and follow the screen shot below:


Temporarily disconnect disk 4 then try to boot again. If it's working, connect disk 4 back and from Admin command prompt:

1. diskpart
2. select disk 4
3. clean
4. exit

Now open disk management, create simple and format it. You'll have the whole disk for data.
