Windows 10 deleted software and desktop icons

This is probably the worst operating system Microsoft has ever developed, Even worse than the Millennium, which was pretty bad. Somehow windows 10 installed it's self and I decided to try it....Then before the 30 days were up I wanted to uninstall. Guess what you only have 28 days. So when I tried to uninstall it my fences and desktop icons disappeared as well as my office software and other things. What a mess. When I tried to use shadow to reinstall the deleted programs, icons etc. They would not reinstall due to windows 10 deleting part of the programs. There is also a pop up screed on the windows that keeps popping up and you can't get rid of it. Well you know I am MAD! Not only that the AMD driver is also not working and HP says that it has not a fix for this yet. Microsoft is no help what so
ever. Any suggestions short of never buying a Microsoft product again!

Fran, welcome to the forums. I have a few suggestions.

    1. Always create a recovery disc.
    2. Always have back ups, Use image programs like Macrium or Aomei to create images.
    3. Before venturing to something new, make sure you did 1 and 2.
    4. Look into system restore, if it worked at one point you can go back to that point.
    5. Don't be so quick to bash MS, you made user mistakes.
    6. There is always Linux and Mac options

    I'm confused by your post.

What OS do you have installed at the moment?

Do you still have a windows.old folder? If so, I hope that this helps:

I fear that you may have gotten to a state where the only fix is to do a clean install. If you don't have a recovery disk from your laptop's maker, they may be able to provide one.

I've been concerned every time MS has made an OS upgrade available. It's always presented as something that anyone can install without worry. Win 10 is worse, because the upgrade is almost pushed onto every PC with Internet access and running 7 or 8. I think that it's very risky to do an OS upgrade without first making an image of the current OS. I'm sorry that you've found that out the hard way.

IMHO, 10 is a pretty good OS, if you have an installation that isn't corrupt. There may be no compelling reasons to upgrade from 7, but 10 fixes some of the annoyances I found in 8.

Did do a disk. did not work ?
Tried to restore to factory settings. Something in windows 10 does not allow this.
    Would not accept back ups.
I did not venture into windows 10 it installed itself. I had read reviews and did not want to go there.

I have tried all of the above. There is something with Windows 10 that goes deep into the system and does not allow these old proven ways to work anymore. Anymore suggestions ...I am willing to try anything at this point....Thank You for your response

Get the instillation DVD from HP, if you don't have it and start over. That's the best suggestion I can give right now. I'm sorry to hear of your problems

    I hope this helps.

I made the mistake of upgrading to Win10 because Win8 was so horrible. Now, Win10 "loses" my desktop and taskbar icons every few days and I'm sick of spending an hour or two figuring out how to get them back--each time requires a different process. The first time was after a Windows Update so I switched to "let me choose when to update." When I didn't update the next time an ujpdate was available, the icons disappeared again so I decided to restore my system to Win8. In that process I got the message "let's check for updates first," and there was a Win10 update and everything was fine after that..until about a week later when the icons once again disappeared. I used my Win7 machine as I'm doing now (Thank God for Win7 so I can get info about Win10) to search for a solution and found it not from "tech advisor" but from user forum. Now, though, the Win10 notebook is losing the icons every three or four days and it's too late to return to Win8, of course. ARRGH! This is the absolute worst OS MS has ever released, worse than Vista or ME. The problem seems to occur either after an update installs or after the last program I use before shutting down at night is an MS "leisure game" like Solitaire or Jigsaw (which locks up after a few minutes anyway). I shut down at night, and when I boot up in the morning, desktop icons are gone, and sometimes the taskbar icons are also missing. MS needs to create a single button for restoring the desktop, at the least. BTW, this is my LAST MS product, ever. I'm switching to Mac or Android as soon as I can afford a new notebook. I have three Win7 machines I'll keep running for as long as possible, but (not that it matters to Microsoft) I'm done with Windows OS.
