How to stop Start menu showing when waking up computer?

Having just seen this thread, I'm also necroposting just to say that the Start menu pops up upon waking from Sleep if you used the Start menu to put it to Sleep in the first place. The reason for this is that Windows always wakes to the exact same state it was in before sleeping, so in such a situation that "previous state" was one which had the Start menu open (because you opened it to put it to Sleep).

I don't think this was the behaviour in previous versions of Windows. One would have assumed that the mere clicking on Sleep would be enough to officially close the Start menu.

Several users have already submitted this issue on the Windows Feedback app.

It is a little bit of an annoyance, when coming out of sleep to see the start menu open. What I do, is right click on the start menu button, when I decide to put the computer to sleep,... and select " Shut down or sign out", and then choose sleep from there. You won't have that start menu there, after coming out of sleep.

As posted before you can create a shortcut by right click the desktop then select New then Shortcut. Then paste this into it.

I also like the Sleep in my Context menu by creating a registry file from a Notepad file. Paste the below in a notepad then rename the extention from .txt to .reg

I don't have Icons showing on the Desktop. My question would be, how is it that when right clicking on the Start Button and putting the computer from there will stop the Start Menu from showing after coming out of sleep but putting the computer to sleep from within the Start Menu causes the Start Menu to appear after coming out of sleep?

Thank you for that. I've found out that logging out from within the Start Menu, it only makes sense the Start Menu is going to be there when waking up the system. As you say, right clicking on the Start Menu does the trick but I've sent my Power Button to put the system to sleep when pressing on that. Consequently, each time I wish to put the computer to sleep manually, I do just that, hit the power button. All the best in the New Year!!!

I realise that this is an old post, but just someone is still following it, or stumbles on it as I did due to my recent issue...
I have just recently had this issue with my Toshiba two-in-one laptop, It started suddenly and for no apparent reason. In scanning the above replies, someone mentioned their laptop not being in tablet mode. Got the crusty grey matter churning... I put my laptop in tablet mode and then back into laptop mode (by folding the screen back and returning it to regular laptop orientation) - cured the problem. Apparently it was stuck in laptop mode and so presented the start menu on the desktop. Simple fix if you have a similar two-in-one situation.
